Arvind Kejriwal bail: Arvind Kejriwal will come out of jail for election campaign, Supreme Court grants bail

Arvind Kejriwal bail hearing: Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal has got a big relief from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court on Friday (May 10) granted interim bail to Kejriwal till June 1. Delhi CM had filed a petition in the court to grant interim bail for the Lok Sabha election campaign. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had arrested Arvind Kejriwal on March 21 in the Delhi Liquor Policy case.

On behalf of Kejriwal, who is in ED custody, it was said that he should get bail to take part in the election campaign. However, the investigating agency had already opposed granting bail to the AAP chief. It said that if Kejriwal is granted bail, it will send a wrong message. He cannot be treated like a special person. However, the bench of Justices Sanjeev Khanna and Dipankar Dutta granted bail to Kejriwal after hearing the arguments.

ED had filed an affidavit opposing the bail.

In the last hearing, the Supreme Court had indicated that it can grant bail to Arvind Kejriwal. This was the reason why ED had filed an affidavit on Thursday opposing Kejriwal's petition. The investigating agency had said that the law is equal for everyone and campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections is not a fundamental, constitutional or legal right.

The investigating agency had said that no political leader has been granted bail for election campaign. Letting Mr Kejriwal out of jail to campaign for AAP candidates will set a wrong precedent. Earlier on Tuesday, Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court had extended Kejriwal's judicial custody till May 20.
