Live-in relationships a 'stigma' for Indian culture: High Court

live-in relationship: Chhattisgarh High Court has given an important decision regarding live-in relationship, the court has termed live-in relationship as a 'stigma'. The court has said that this is an insult to Indian culture. The High Court in its comment said that this is a mentality brought by a western country, which is contrary to the general expectations of Indian customs. Chhattisgarh High Court has given this decision in a case related to Dantewada.

A double bench of Justices Gautam Bhaduri and Sanjay S Aggarwal made strong remarks on the issue of custody of a child born out of a live-in relationship. The father filed an application in the High Court regarding the custody of the child. After hearing this case, the court rejected this application.

Making a strong comment, the Court said that live-in relationship adopted by some sections of the society is still stigmatized in Indian culture, because live-in relationship is an imported concept. This is contrary to the general expectations of Indian custom.

The court said that it is very easy for a married person to get out of a live-in relationship. In such cases, the court cannot turn a blind eye to the plight of the survivors of an abusive live-in relationship and the children born out of that relationship. The court has termed this relationship as against Indian beliefs.
