New York: The timeless beauty, heritage and cultural diversity of the saree was showcased at the 'Sari Goes Global' event in Times Square, New York City. More than five hundred women from the Indian-American community as well as from Bangladesh, Nepal, UK, USA, UAE, Uganda, Trinidad and Guyana participated in the event. The event was organized by British Women in Sarees in partnership with other organizations working to empower girls, young women and women through educational and cultural resources.
Inspired by the success of earlier global events such as the historic Saree Walkathon in London's Trafalgar Square and the Royal Stock Ladies, the event aimed to celebrate cultural diversity and support the artisans of rural India and preserve traditional craftsmanship. In the program, saree was described as a symbol of unity and empowerment of women across the world. He called for promoting this dress globally.
Dilip Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner of International Affairs of New York City, honored the organizers of the event and appreciated their contribution. He said that such programs remain a platform for cultural exchange and influence of the global community. He said that apart from being a symbol of beauty, the saree is also important to preserve the traditional craftsmanship.
Shruti Pandey, Consul General of India in New York, said that the saree with its versatility and beauty has become popular not only in India but all over the world.
British charity representative Dr Jessica Sims appreciated the importance of the sari in promoting cultural diversity.
