Indian male wrestler Bajrang Punia has been temporarily suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). This has dealt a big blow to Bajrang's participation in the Paris Olympics. According to NADA, during the election trial held in Sonipat on March 10, Bajrang had refused to give his sample for dope test, due to which this action has been taken against him.
During the trial in Sonipat, Bajrang refused to give his dope test sample, after which NADA asked him to give the sample. NADA informed the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), following which WADA suggested that NADA send a notice to Bajrang seeking answers as to why he refused to test. NADA had issued a notice to Bajrang on 23 April and asked him to reply by 7 May. The date of hearing will be decided only when Bajrang responds to NADA.
If the ban on Bajrang is not lifted in time, then he will not be able to participate in any tournament including the selection trials to be held next month. It is being told that Bajrang had won the bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics. So far no Indian has achieved Olympic quota in the 65 kg category. Sujit Kalkal will represent India in the World Qualifiers to be held in Istanbul from May 9.
