Mumbai: The heat has turned the entire Maharashtra into a blazing furnace, due to decline in income the prices of green vegetables have started rising. The prices of fennel, flowers, cucumber, saffron horn, coriander, fenugreek, radish, spinach and peas have started increasing rapidly in the APMC (Agricultural Produce Market Committee) wholesale market of Navi Mumbai.
Last week, fancy was sold at Rs 60 to 70 per kg in the wholesale market, now it is being sold at Rs 90 to 100 per kg. Whereas in bulk, hanging is sold at Rs 160 to 200 per kg. The flower was sold for around Rs 18 instead of Rs 12. Sargava horn used to be sold for Rs 24, which is now sold for Rs 35. In the retail market, a pair of coriander is sold for Rs 25 to 30, fenugreek for Rs 25 to Rs 60 and spinach for Rs 20 to 25 per kg. The prices of vegetables and coriander have doubled in a week. Only the prices of tomato, bitter gourd, capsicum and green chilli are still under control. Market traders say that the income from vegetables has reduced. Another scorching heat has increased the rate of drying and spoilage of vegetables, hence prices have increased.
Like Rajkot, APMC shops close in the afternoon
Like Rajkot, when the temperature in Navi Mumbai goes above 40 degrees, the shopkeepers of Bhajipala market have started closing their shops from 12 noon to 4 pm like Rajkot. In extreme heat, water has to be continuously sprinkled on the vegetables.
