The Supreme Court has stayed the CBI investigation into the West Bengal teacher recruitment scam. While hearing the petition of West Bengal government, the court said that we will hear the case next on May 6. Till then CBI will remain on investigation. The court said that if an appointment is valid then it can be cancelled.
In fact, the Calcutta High Court on Monday canceled 25,753 appointments made in 2016. The High Court has also directed these teachers to return the salary received during the last 7-8 years with 12 percent interest. Therefore the court has given 6 weeks time.
The Bengal government said it will pay the April salaries of all 25,573 teachers and non-teaching staff whose appointments have been cancelled. The state government said that all the employees have worked almost the entire April. Therefore, everyone will be paid salaries until the Supreme Court decides on the matter.
The Government of West Bengal had recruited teaching and non-teaching staff for government and aided schools through the State Level Selection Examination-2016 in 2016. Then more than 23 lakh people had given the recruitment exam for 24,640 vacant posts.
There is an allegation of bribe of Rs 5 to 15 lakh in this recruitment. Calcutta High Court had received many complaints in this matter. CBI had arrested former state education minister Partha Chatterjee, his close aide Arpita Mukherjee and some officials in the case of corruption in recruitment.
