Center directs CBSE to conduct board exams twice by 2025-26

Sources said that the Education Ministry has directed to start preparations for taking board exams twice a year from the academic year 2025-26. However, sources have denied plans to implement the semester system.

Sources further said that the Education Ministry and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will discuss with school principals next month about conducting the examination twice a year.

At present CBSE is considering whether there will be a change in the academic calendar by conducting examinations twice a year. The Ministry of Education wanted to start conducting the examination twice from the academic year 2024-25, but as this was not possible, it has been decided to conduct the examination twice from 2025-26.

It is noteworthy that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had said in a conversation with journalists last October that it would not be mandatory for students to take the board exams twice.

He further said that like the engineering entrance exam JEE, students will be able to appear for the board exam twice. Out of these two examinations, the one with higher marks will be considered. However, taking the exam twice is absolutely optional.
