Pakistan court bans Imran and his wife from making politically provocative statements

Islamabad, 26 April (HIST). Jailed former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been banned by a court on Thursday for issuing inflammatory statements against various state institutions including the army.

Hearing a petition, Islamabad Accountability Court Judge Baseer Javed also said that the media should limit its reporting to the court proceedings and should not report the statements of the accused. According to the order, Khan, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, had given provocative political statements against state institutions including the army, judiciary and army chief.

According to the court order, such statements disrupt judicial discipline and create obstruction in judicial work. This order states that during the hearing of the PTI founder, the media will limit its reporting to the court proceedings and not on the statements of the accused.

In its order, the court also said that the prosecution, the accused and their lawyers should not make any such political and inflammatory statements which may disrupt court discipline. While interacting with media persons in Adiala jail, Khan had said, “Democracy rests on the supremacy of law and free and fair elections but what we saw was jungle law. Police interference in the by-elections of Punjab is very worrying.
