Democracy in the Indian Constitution means 'rule of the people, by the people and for the people'. The Constitution has been in force since 1950. Previously, provincial political parties were a major part of the states' electoral activity. Congress was the only nationwide political party. There were mainly parties that were doing state politics more than anything else.
The Indian central authorities never showed seriousness towards the strength of the federal structure. Work has been done to weaken the states and eliminate regional political parties. Even regional and provincial political parties have not stood up for the rights of the states because of their lust for central power. By agreeing with the Central Government for centralization, they could not avoid hitting themselves in the foot.
The weakness of provincial political parties is becoming the basis of many current problems. The Indian public has always been used by the politicians and they themselves have shied away from standing with the Indian public. The Central Government has not been able to fulfill its duty of providing basic amenities of normal life to the Indian people. Education, health and employment were and are the main needs which have not been fulfilled by the Indian people till date.
Rulers have nurtured and perpetuated the mindset of becoming rulers rather than servants of the public. The power to snatch away the distribution space from Gram Panchayat to State and Center is becoming stronger. Appropriate policies were not adopted to ease relations with neighboring countries. The misconception of giving priority to weapons took a fatal path. The hunger for power among Indian politicians has increased rapidly. The increase in dynastic tendencies among politicians has also been a major reason for the current decline.
The current situation in the country at the time of elections is very unpleasant. The ruling party has not run a pro-people government for the last 10 years and is more interested in realizing its vision of a Hindutva state that has been propagated for 70 years. The equality of the Indian community has been diminished through disgusting practices. There have been more efforts to create distance rather than mutual understanding.
People's rights and demands have been suppressed. The way brutality has been inflicted on opposition state governments in India has created fear in the hearts of people. The democracy of which India was proud in front of the world, has been repeatedly insulted by the ruling party which has embarrassed the country in front of the world. Since 2018, he has forcibly taken money for his political organization by starting a disgusting game of black marketing of secret election donations?
The question is, will the Indian people be able to exercise their right to vote for democracy in the 2024 elections without any fear? Will the ruling party, which has a habit of killing opposition political parties, allow people to do so? Will the opposition parties explain the meaning of democracy to the Indian people and present the right issues before them? Organizations working for social, political and economic consciousness in India will be able to convince and persuade the Indian people to exercise their right to vote for their rights by being fearless and impartial.
The need of the hour is that every conscious citizen should rise above factions and awaken people for democracy. Villages, cities, towns will have to be reached. There is speculation that if the ruling party comes back to power through fear, confusion and other shams, impunity, punishment and secrecy, the future of democracy in India will be in great danger. One should never give up hope. There should be work for public awareness. People's consciousness and people's power will establish a beautiful democratic state.
