Khunti, April 20 (Hindustan Reporter) Among the various features of the parliamentary seat reserved for the tribes who are always in the headlines, one special one is that the number of women voters is more than that of men in all the six assembly constituencies of this Lok Sabha constituency. The number of women voters on this seat is 111383. Out of total 215101 voters in Tamar assembly constituency, male voters are 107358, while the number of female voters is 107743. Similarly, in Torpa the number of female voters is 1000487, while there are 978122 male voters. The total number of voters in Khunti assembly constituency is 223658. Of these, male voters are 108771, while the number of female voters is 114884. In Simdega assembly constituency, the number of female voters is 124800 compared to 117062 male voters. In Kolebira assembly constituency of the same district, there are 197287 female voters out of total 210300, while the number of male voters is 103013.
Only once in 17 parliamentary elections did a woman get a chance to reach Parliament
Even though the number of women voters in Khunti parliamentary constituency is more than that of men, in the 17 Lok Sabha elections held so far in this parliamentary seat, only one woman has got a chance to reach the Parliament and she was the former minister of Bihar and Sushila Kerketta, Principal of Birsa College, Khunti. Sushila Kerketta had defeated six-time MP Kadiya Munda in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. Before or after that no woman got a chance to reach the Lok Sabha. However, Congress did not give tickets to any women candidate before or after Sushila Keretta. BJP has also not fielded any woman candidate till now. Although Dayamani Barla had tried her luck on Aam Aadmi Party ticket in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, but she could not even save her deposit. It is not that other women candidates did not contest elections from this parliamentary seat, but they did not get a chance to try their luck on the ticket of any major political party.
