On this auspicious occasion, nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped and everyone seeks blessings for the well-being of their family. The festival of Navratri is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm. One of the most important days among all the 9 days is Maha Ashtami. On this day, black gram is offered to Goddess Mataji. Halwa and puri are also kept along with it.

black gram ingredients

  • 1 cup black gram
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • salt to taste
  • 31/2 tsp ghee
  • 1 inch ginger
  • 2 teaspoons green chilli
  • 2 teaspoon red chilli
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon sindhav salt
  • 2 teaspoon dry mango powder
  • 1 teaspoon Kasoori Methi
  • finely chopped coriander
  • leftover black gram water
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon asafoetida
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 3-4 green chillies

Soak black gram overnight for 8-10 hours. After this wash it thoroughly. – Now heat the cooker and add gram in it. – Add one bay leaf, salt and ghee and cover. Cook for 2 whistles on medium flame. – After this, leave the gram on the gas for 10 minutes. – Now take a mixer bowl and add ginger, green chilli, red chilli powder, cumin powder, turmeric powder and coriander powder. Also add black pepper powder, black salt, dry mango powder and roasted kasoori methi. – Now take a pan and heat some ghee in it. Add cumin, asafoetida and the special masala you have prepared in it. Stir it well and make sure the spices mix well. If needed, add boiled gram water. When the masala is roasted well, add boiled gram to it and mix well. Add salt as per your taste. Let the excess water dry. Sprinkle some garam masala on top, this will enhance the taste of the dish.
