Ludhiana: The court of Additional Sessions Judge Shatin Goel has refused to stay the release of the film 'Chamkila' based on late Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila and Bibi Amarjot Kaur. The film is scheduled to release on OTT platform Netflix on April 12. The court's decision has brought great relief to Reliance Entertainment, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, actor Diljit Dusanjh, actress Parineeti Chopra. The stay application was debated in the court for about two hours.
The order came on a petition filed on April 8 by Ishjit Randhawa and Sanjot Randhawa, sons of late producer Gurdev Singh Randhawa. Giving detailed information about the case, Reliance Entertainment's lawyer Siddharth Sharma Tejas said that the petitioner had filed a similar case last year also, in which the stay petition has already been rejected. Therefore his petition filed now cannot be considered. Apart from this, if any stay is given before the release of the film, it will cause huge financial loss to the company. It was also emphasized that this matter is not actionable in the eyes of law. In the petition, the petitioners argued that Amar Singh Chamkila's widow had given her father the right to make her husband's biopic in writing on October 12, 2012. He also received a sum of five lakh rupees for the said purpose and promised to be bound by the aforesaid agreement.
No time limit was set for making the biopic. It was further said that his father passed away on 3 November 2022. When the petitioners started preparations for making the said biopic and contacted Gurmail Kaur, she started dragging the matter on one pretext or the other. Later he came to know that action was going on regarding the production of this film.
