On the day of Dhanteras, people buy valuable things like gold, silver, utensils, electronic goods and vehicles, but among all this there is one thing without which Dhanteras shopping is considered incomplete and that is ‘broom’. Have you ever wondered why there is such an ancient and strong tradition of buying a broom every year on the day of Dhanteras? According to religious beliefs, the broom is not only considered a means of cleaning but also a symbol of Goddess Lakshmi. If you also want happiness, peace and permanent prosperity in your home this Dhanteras, then it is very important to know why a broom is bought on Dhanteras and what special rules should be followed after bringing it home.

Broom has been given a very sacred place in Sanatan culture and Vaastu Shastra. Regarding the broom, it is believed that along with the dirt from the house, it removes negative energy, poverty and laziness. The house where there is cleanliness and hygiene, Goddess Lakshmi resides there. According to mythology, during the churning of the ocean, when Lord Dhanvantari appeared with the nectar pot, at the same time Goddess Lakshmi also appeared. Maa Lakshmi is very fond of cleanliness, hence on the day of Dhanteras, buying a new broom and bringing it into the house destroys poverty in the house and brings in the entry of Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. This is the reason that on this day people of every class buy a new broom as per their capacity.

After purchasing a broom from the market on the day of Dhanteras and bringing it home, it is considered extremely important to follow some special rules, otherwise the full results of worship and purchase are not achieved:

  • Tie white thread: After bringing a new broom home, before worshiping it, a white colored silk or cotton thread should be tied at its lower part. It is believed that by doing this, the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi always remain and blessings come to the house.

  • Keep in a secret place: The broom should never be kept in the open or in front of the main door. Always keep it in a corner of the house where it cannot be easily seen by outsiders.

  • Do not insult the broom: Goddess Lakshmi is considered to reside in the broom, hence never step on the broom nor cross over it. Even if this happens unknowingly, one should apologize with folded hands.

  • Keep it safe like a safe: Never keep the broom in a vertical position, it should always be kept lying on the ground. One should avoid sweeping the house after sunset as it angers Goddess Lakshmi.

Nowadays, fancy brooms made of plastic and synthetic filament are also being sold in the market, but from religious and Vaastu point of view, one should always buy a wicker broom or flower broom on the day of Dhanteras. If possible, bring home only a broom made of natural grass or wicker. Apart from this, a broken or old broom should never be used in the house. On the day of Diwali or Dhanteras, the old broom should be thrown out of the house and a new broom should be used in its place. By keeping these small but very important things in mind, you can overcome financial difficulties in your life and pave the way for happiness and prosperity for your family throughout the year.
