Just before the holy festival of Diwali and Dhanteras, a very scary and sensational news is coming out from Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. A massive fire suddenly broke out in the very popular and busy Gaur City Mall located in Greater Noida West, creating an atmosphere of chaos in the entire area. At the time of the incident, there was a huge crowd of buyers and families inside the mall to buy gold, silver, clothes and utensils on the occasion of Dhanteras. Suddenly a cloud of black smoke rose in a part of the mall, creating a stampede-like situation. As soon as the information was received, several vehicles of the local police and fire department immediately reached the spot and relief and rescue operations were started. After this accident, serious questions have been raised regarding the security arrangements of malls and commercial complexes during the festive season.
According to eyewitnesses, there was a huge crowd of shoppers inside Gaur City Mall on the evening of Dhanteras. People were enjoying shopping with their families, when suddenly smoke was seen coming out from the upper floor or electrical panel of the mall. Within no time, the smoke engulfed the entire mall, making it difficult for the people inside to breathe. The security guards immediately raised the alarm and started evacuating people safely. However, due to this sudden disaster, children, women and elderly people were badly frightened. A huge crowd gathered on the roads outside the mall and a traffic jam was created, due to which even fire engines had to struggle a lot to reach.
As soon as information about the incident was received, more than half a dozen fire tenders from Greater Noida and nearby fire stations were immediately dispatched to the spot. Fire personnel carried out a rescue operation to rescue people trapped inside the mall and started spraying water on the fire from all sides. The good thing is that most of the people were evacuated safely in time, due to which there has been no news of any major loss of life or property yet. Fire department officials’ initial estimate is that short circuit could be the main cause of the fire, although this will be confirmed only after detailed investigation. The mall administration and technical team are trying to find out why the modern fire sprinklers and extinguishers could not be activated on time.
After this incident, the security arrangements of other shopping malls of Greater Noida and NCR have once again come under serious question mark. Experts say that during festivals, when there is more crowd in the mall than its capacity, then the rules of security and emergency exits should be strictly followed. Senior officials of the district administration and authority have inspected the spot and have sought a fire audit report from the mall management. The administration has clarified that if any kind of negligence is found in the investigation, strict legal action will be taken against the concerned mall management. Due to this accident, people who came for shopping on Dhanteras had to face a lot of mental trouble.
