Erdogan surrounded in Parliament over Türkiye-Pakistan Mecca Defense Pact, will India be affected?

These days, there is a new geopolitical upheaval in international diplomacy from West Asia to South Asia, at the center of which is the ‘Mecca Defense Alliance’ between Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. There has been a stir in Turkish politics and on the internal front regarding this defense agreement. There was a huge uproar during the approval of this pact in the Turkish Parliament located in Ankara and the opposition parties surrounded President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. A heated debate broke out among parliamentarians over whether coming within the scope of the agreement could draw Turkey into a regional conflict that has nothing to do with its own national interests. Meanwhile, the biggest question being raised is whether this military agreement will affect India’s security and will Turkey be a part of any military misadventure against India in future? Amidst all these sharp questions and domestic opposition, the temperature of global diplomacy regarding the Mecca Pact has risen. Mecca Defense Alliance and ruckus in the Turkish Parliament: When this important 10-year defense agreement (Mecca Pact) with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia was presented for approval in the Turkish Parliament, the atmosphere in the house became completely heated. There was a heated argument between the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the opposition parties. Opposition MPs directly questioned the Erdogan government as to what Turkey would gain strategically by joining this trilateral military alliance. Under the provisions of the agreement, if there is an external attack on any one member country, it will be considered an attack on all three countries. There is a concern within Türkiye regarding this clause that the Turkish army could be involved in the old and complex territorial disputes between Pakistan and the Gulf countries. Due to the increasing uproar and protests in the Parliament, even the proceedings had to be postponed, which is enough to show that as much as this pact is a diplomatic victory for Erdogan, it is also becoming a problem at the domestic level. Will Türkiye attack India? Meaning of the Defense Pact: Ever since this agreement came to light, the discussion has intensified in all the diplomatic circles from New Delhi to whether Turkey, along with Pakistan, can become a part of any strategic action against India. Experts believe that the basic objective of this agreement is mainly for the security of West Asia and joint efforts against terrorism, which includes Saudi Arabia’s money, Turkey’s modern drone technology and Pakistan’s military manpower. However, Pakistan is constantly trying to use this platform for anti-India propaganda or to disturb the regional balance. Opposition leaders in the Turkish Parliament also expressed apprehension that building deeper military ties with Pakistan could permanently damage Turkey’s diplomatic and economic relations with the world’s largest democratic country like India. Indian security agencies are keeping a very close watch on this entire incident and every activity of the three countries so that the sovereignty of the country does not get affected in any way. Advantages and disadvantages of Erdogan’s strategy with Pakistan and Saudi President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is continuously increasing his influence in the Muslim world to establish Turkey as a global superpower. The Mecca Defense Pact is a part of this larger geopolitical strategy, under which Turkey wants to give wings to its defense industry globally with the financial strength of Saudi Arabia and the nuclear and military force of Pakistan. But this step of Erdogan has caused deep resentment among the people and the secular faction within the country which is facing economic crisis. Critics believe that with Turkey’s economy already facing hyperinflation and internal challenges, getting involved in military alliances and agreements abroad is not in the country’s interest. These sharp questions being raised inside and outside the Parliament have increased the problems of the Erdogan government. In the coming days, it will be very interesting to see how Erdogan steers the boat of this Mecca Defense Pact amidst domestic political pressure and international equations.
