A very shocking big news is coming out from the corridors of the world regarding global defense strategies, modern military technologies and military preparedness of the superpowers. Emil Michael, Technology Chief of the US Department of Defense i.e. Pentagon, has recently openly admitted in a public forum that America was not fully prepared for the changing nature of modern drone warfare and its uncertainties. The long-running fierce war between Russia and Ukraine has exposed American military preparedness and proved that Ukraine has left even a superpower like America behind in terms of low-cost drone technology. Since this revelation, there has been a stir among international defense analysts. Let us know in detail what other big revelations this top Pentagon official has made during the Wall Street Journal Tech Conference and what new concerns America is facing regarding future battlefields.
“We were completely unprepared for modern drone warfare”: Pentagon’s technology chief’s blunt admission
Addressing the prestigious Wall Street Journal Tech Conference held in Napa, California, Pentagon Technology Chief Emil Michael candidly admitted that the US had no idea that commercial and small drones would completely change the course of war in modern conflicts. He said that the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has completely surprised America, because the American defense system had never imagined a drone war of this level.
Michael also acknowledged that although the United States has provided significant military and economic assistance to Ukraine since the beginning of the war, on many occasions the Ukrainian military has had to develop its own technologies to meet immediate battlefield needs because those technologies were not available in the US defense stockpile. He said in clear words, “We helped Ukraine in every possible way, but the kind of lethality and drone solutions that they needed in the war zone, they had to develop themselves because we did not have that technology at that time.”
Huge difference in drone production revealed: America has 5 lakhs, while Ukraine is making crores of drones.
Citing the figures, the Pentagon’s technology chief also highlighted the huge gap between the manufacturing capabilities of the US and war-torn Ukraine. He said that during the tenure of the previous US government, American defense industries had manufactured about 1,000 drones, which has now been increased to a stock of about 500,000 (five lakh) drones.
But, when compared with Ukraine’s production, this figure appears very small. Amidst this ongoing fierce war with Russia, Ukraine alone is making huge estimates of manufacturing about 80 to 100 lakh (i.e. 8 to 10 million) drones this year. This indiscriminate production of low-cost and large-scale drones has given Ukraine an extremely strong edge on the battlefield, which even American defense experts are now acknowledging.
Pentagon, SpaceX and Elon Musk also involved in studying future battlefields
After the tough lessons learned from the Russia-Ukraine war, the Pentagon is now busy in changing the strategy of future wars. Michael informed that a special initiative named ‘Project Meridian’ has been started under the Defense Department. The main objective of this project is to investigate what types of wars may occur in the future, including possible conflicts underground and in space.
Big personalities from America’s private technology world have also been included in this very important initiative. Chief Executive Officer of SpaceX Elon Musk And veteran industrialists like Palmer Lucky, founder of Anduril Industries, are working closely with the Defense Department in this direction so that America becomes fully capable of dealing with every strategic challenge of the future.
American caution regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI) and targeting
Even though the US military is increasingly moving towards cheaper and autonomous systems, Emil Michael explained that the Pentagon is still very cautious about the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the battlefield. He said that even today, in the process of determining military attacks and targets, instead of AI, traditional intelligence reports, satellite images and human verification are given the highest priority. The US is still in the early stages of AI targeting and human judgment is paramount.
Furthermore, while talking about the global artificial intelligence (AI) race, Michael claimed that America is still ahead of China in this matter. According to him, America’s strength in cutting-edge semiconductor chips and huge data-center capacity gives it an edge over Beijing. However, he also admitted that the competition between China and America regarding the development of AI is very tough and the gap between the two countries is very less.
