To provide relief to the general public from the burden of rising electricity bills and to give impetus to renewable energy in the country, the Central Government’s ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’ is bringing a revolution in the entire country. The main goal of this ambitious scheme is to provide up to 300 units of free electricity every month to 1 crore middle-class and low-income families by installing rooftop solar systems on their rooftops. Along with this, the government is providing financial assistance (capital subsidy) of up to ₹ 78,000 directly to the consumers in their bank accounts on installing grid-connected solar systems. If you have your own pitched roof and valid electricity connection, this scheme gives a golden opportunity to reduce your electricity bill to zero as well as earn by selling excess electricity to the grid.
Under this scheme, direct financial assistance is provided by the Central Government on the basis of the capacity to install solar panels. The government gives a subsidy of ₹30,000 for installing a system of 1 kilowatt (kW) capacity, which produces about 4 to 5 units of electricity per day. This assistance amount increases to ₹60,000 for systems of 2 kW capacity. Whereas on installing a solar plant of 3 kilowatt or more capacity on your rooftop, a maximum flat subsidy of ₹ 78,000 is transferred to the bank account through DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer). The 3 KW plant produces 12 to 15 units of electricity daily (about 360-400 units per month), which makes the family’s monthly domestic consumption of 300 units completely free and the remaining excess electricity can be sold to the Discom (electricity company) through net metering to earn additional income.
To avail the benefits of PM Surya Ghar Yojana, the applicant must be a permanent resident of India. The applicant should have a valid residential electricity connection in his/her name and should not have any outstanding old electricity bill. The most important condition is that the applicant for installing solar panels should have a solid, shadow-free roof, which receives sufficient sunlight throughout the day. Typically around 100 sq ft of pitched roof is required for a 1 kW system, 200 sq ft for 2 kW and 300 sq ft of pitched roof for a 3 kW capacity. The scheme is applicable only for domestic residential roofs; This subsidy is not valid for commercial properties, factories or agricultural connections. No member of the family should previously be availing double benefit of any other government solar subsidy scheme.
Before applying online, the applicant should prepare some necessary digital documents in advance so that there is no delay in the verification process on the portal. First of all, valid Aadhaar card of the applicant is mandatory, which acts as proof of identity and address. A recent domestic electricity bill (Electricity Bill) within 6 months, in which the consumer account number (CA / Consumer Number) is clearly mentioned. Active savings bank account opened in the name of the applicant and copy of its passbook or canceled check (this account must be linked to Aadhaar and NPCI, as the subsidy will be credited to this account). Certificate of ownership or residence of the roof, current mobile number of the applicant (which is linked to electricity connection and Aadhaar) and recent passport size color photograph should be kept ready.
