Cyclone Arnab’s havoc in Bihar: standing paddy crops scattered in the fields

The effect of the dangerous cyclonic storm ‘Arnab’ which arose from the Bay of Bengal is now fully visible in the neighboring states as well as in many districts of Bihar. Due to the impact of the cyclone, continuous heavy rains and strong cold winds in dozens of districts of the state have shaken the normal life as well as the agricultural world. At this time, the paddy crop was standing fully ripe in the fields and the harvesting phase was going on, but due to this sudden change in weather and strong storm, a large number of standing paddy crops have fallen on the ground and got ruined. Due to this natural disaster, deep lines of worry have been drawn on the foreheads of the farmers of Bihar, because months of hard work and capital seem to be wasted in one stroke. Along with this, a huge drop in temperature has been recorded due to unseasonal rains and sudden entry of cold winds, due to which severe cold has hit the state before time.

For farmers in rural areas of Bihar, this is the time of the year when they prepare to bring home the fruits of their year’s hard work, i.e. the paddy crop. But the torrential rains and strong winds caused by cyclone ‘Arnab’ have dashed the dreams of the farmers. In many districts, the blooming paddy ears in the fields have been submerged in water and due to heavy weight and wind, the plants have completely fallen on the ground. Agricultural experts say that the grains of crops which have been submerged in water will start turning black and the possibility of germination will increase, which will have a negative impact on both the quality and quantity of the yield. The farmers who had done farming by taking loan or taking money on interest from moneylenders, are now facing a serious problem of repaying the bank loan and maintaining the family.

Usually, in the last days of October, a slight pinkish cold is felt, but the continuous rains caused by the cyclonic storm and the cold winds coming from the north direction have completely changed the mood of the weather. Sightings of the Sun God have become rare even during the day and the sky is covered with dark clouds. Due to the sudden drop in temperature by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius, people have been forced to take out warm sweaters, jackets and quilts from their boxes. The cold winds blowing in the morning and evening have made people shiver, due to which especially the elderly and small children are being advised to take special precautions to avoid seasonal diseases, cold, cough and viral fever.

Considering the seriousness of the situation, Bihar’s Disaster Management Department and Meteorological Center have issued Orange and Yellow alerts in many districts of the state. The administration is continuously appealing that farmers should not go to open fields during this bad weather and protect themselves from lightning. Farmers have been advised by the Agriculture Department that in the areas where harvesting has been done, they should immediately keep their harvested crops covered in safe places or under permanent sheds so that further losses can be avoided. Government and district administration officials have also been instructed to conduct Crop Loss Survey at the ground level as soon as possible so that appropriate compensation and relief can be provided to the affected farmers as per rules.

This havoc of nature has once again proved how unplanned and sudden cyclonic storms cause deep damage to the rural economy. The farmers of Bihar are once again looking helpless before the wrath of nature, whose eyes are now fixed on the government and administration. The farmers are demanding that a special survey should be conducted and financial assistance should be given to them as soon as possible so that they can recover from this huge loss. Meanwhile, common citizens have also been advised to take special care of their health in this changing and cold weather and avoid unnecessary trips so as to stay safe during this disaster.
