There is a lot of excitement and curiosity among lakhs of youth of the state regarding the Preliminary Qualification Examination i.e. UP PET (PET Exam 2026) to be conducted by Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UPSSSC). The doors to the main examination of various Group C government jobs of Uttar Pradesh like Lekhpal, Junior Assistant, VDO, and Excise Constable are opened by the percentile score of this PET. Like every year, this time also the biggest question floating in the minds of the candidates appearing in the examination is that how many marks will they get in UP PET, their selection will be confirmed and they will get a chance to appear in the main examination of different recruitments. To answer this question and clear the confusion of the candidates, well-known expert teachers and competitive exam experts of Uttar Pradesh have analyzed the entire arithmetic and percentile formula in detail.
According to the leading subject experts and expert teachers who conduct UPSSSC PET preparation, merely passing or securing the minimum cut-off marks in PET is not enough. Since candidates are shortlisted for the next main examinations on the basis of marks obtained in this examination, the higher your score, the stronger are your chances of selection. Experts clearly believe that if you want to secure your seat in the main examination of big and much awaited recruitments of Uttar Pradesh like Revenue Accountant or Junior Assistant, then your raw score in the question paper of 100 marks should be at least between 70 to 75 marks. The percentile of candidates scoring more than 70 marks usually reaches around 95 to 98 percentile, which is considered completely safe to get a call letter in any major recruitment exam.
UP PET exam is conducted in multiple shifts, due to which it is natural that there is slight difference in the difficulty level of question papers of different shifts. To make the process fair and balanced, the Commission uses a complex method of normalization. Experts say that many times candidates consider their actual marks i.e. raw marks as final, whereas the cut-off for the main examination is always decided on the basis of normalized score and the percentile formed from it. Percentile score shows what percentage of students you have outperformed out of the total candidates who appeared for the exam. For example, if you get 99 percentile, it simply means that you are among the top 1 percent meritorious students of the state and you will be eligible for almost every upcoming main examination of the commission.
Competitive exam experts say that the PET cut-off for every UPSSSC recruitment is not the same, rather it completely depends on the number of posts advertised and the special qualifications demanded for that post. When the number of vacancies is large, like 8,000 or 10,000 posts, the Commission shortlists 15 to 30 times the number of candidates relative to the total posts. In such a situation, candidates with 60 to 65 raw marks (approximately 88 to 92 percentile) also get the opportunity to appear in the main examination. But on the contrary, when the number of posts in a recruitment is only between 200 to 500, the cut-off of PET goes much higher and only candidates with 75+ raw marks or 98+ percentile are able to get shortlisted. Therefore, candidates should always work on the strategy to score maximum marks.
Experts have given some very effective and practical tips to the candidates to get success in UP PET exam. There is a provision of negative marking of 1/4 (0.25) marks in the examination, hence the tendency to focus on wrong answers should be completely avoided. Experts say that often students lose marks for their correct answers by solving more questions in a hurry without thinking. To score well in the examination, it is very important to have special grip on the sections of Graph & Table Interpretation, General Hindi, and Current Affairs, because this section proves to get more marks in less time. Giving mock tests regularly and practicing previous years’ question papers relieves the problem of time management within the examination hall to a great extent.
There is every possibility of issuing notification for direct main examinations for vacant posts in many departments soon after the declaration of PET 2026 results by Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission. Experts advise that the candidates who have appeared or are going to appear for the examination should start preparing for the main examination without wasting time by matching their probable marks with the answer key. If your predicted score is in the range of 65 to 70 marks, then you should continue your studies with full positivity. This score card of UP PET remains valid for one year, which provides you a golden opportunity to join various government jobs that are available throughout the year.
