At present, news of a very shocking and scary natural disaster is coming from the neighboring country Bhutan. A major accident has occurred in Bhutan amidst the increasing impact of climate change and natural imbalance in the Himalayan region. A glacial lake located in the Punakha region of Bhutan has suddenly burst, due to which a large amount of mountain water has flowed towards the low-lying areas. Due to this terrible deluge, there is a serious and grave threat of flash flood in the north-eastern states of India, especially the border districts of Assam (Assam) and West Bengal (West Bengal). Considering the seriousness of the situation, India’s security and administrative machinery has started relief and rescue operations on war footing and till now about 15 thousand people have been evacuated to safe places. Let us know in detail what is the entire incident of this glacier burst and which areas of India are being affected the most.
Glacier burst in Punakha, Bhutan at 8.15 pm, Sankosh river in spate
According to official information received, this natural disaster occurred on Thursday night in the Punakha region of Bhutan. At around 8.15 pm Indian time, a glacier lake there suddenly burst, due to which a huge amount of accumulated water started flowing down the mountains at a fast speed. This raging water of the lake flowed and reached Taktisimakhang area of Sankosh River during the night itself.

Realizing the seriousness of the incident, Bhutan administration and Indian agencies immediately issued an alert. Army personnel deployed at the Hydroelectric Project Office in Taktsimakhang and Gasa Chachu area were instructed to immediately move to safe higher altitudes. The fortunate thing is that due to timely warning in this sudden incident, there is no report of any loss of life or property, but the strong flow of water still remains a big challenge for the low-lying areas.
High alert in West Bengal and Assam, 15 thousand people evacuated safely from Alipurduar

In Alipurduar district of West Bengal, announcements were made immediately and relief teams were launched in many sensitive villages situated on the banks of river Sankosh.

Increasing threat of climate change and sensitivity of Himalayan lakes
This incident once again reminds us of how sensitive and endangered our Himalayan regions have become due to global warming and climate change. Due to increasing temperature, the glaciers present on the mountains are melting rapidly, due to which the lakes formed on them (Glacial Lakes Outburst Floods – GLOF) become weak and burst suddenly. These types of disasters come without any prior warning and can cause huge devastation in a moment. At present, the situation is being continuously monitored through mutual coordination between India and Bhutan, and all security measures have been strictly implemented to avert any major damage on the Indian side.
