IPL 2027: Mumbai Indians break ties with Lasith Malinga

Before the upcoming season of IPL i.e. IPL 2027, the five-time champion Mumbai Indians franchise has taken a very big and shocking decision. The team management has severed ties with legendary fast bowler and bowling coach Lasith Malinga while making a major reshuffle in its coaching and support staff. Apart from Malinga, Mumbai Indians have also shown the way to two other key support staff members from the team. After this major administrative change, discussions have intensified in the cricket circles that the franchise is preparing to enter the field with a new strategy and new coaching setup for the upcoming mini auction and the next season.

Lasith Malinga, one of the most successful bowlers in IPL history and known worldwide for his dangerous ‘Yorker’, was associated with the team as the bowling coach of Mumbai Indians for the last few years. Malinga played the key role of the bowling coach of the franchise from 2024 to 2026 and trained young fast bowlers under his supervision. Mumbai Indians have issued an official statement clarifying that Lasith Malinga will no longer be a part of their coaching setup in the upcoming season. The franchise has expressed gratitude to Malinga for his invaluable contribution, commitment and years of service, but this sudden separation has definitely surprised the fans.

Apart from Lasith Malinga, the two other members who have been dropped from the support staff by Mumbai Indians include the names of experienced coach Paras Mhambrey and fielding coach Carl Hopkinson. Paras Mhambrey was associated with Indian cricket and this franchise for a long time. Mhambrey served with Mumbai Indians in two different stints (from 2011 to 2017 and again from 2024 to 2026). On the other hand, Carl Hopkinson was associated with the team as fielding coach since the beginning of 2025. With the exit of three big giants together, it has become clear that the management of Mumbai Indians is working rapidly towards making major changes internally to overcome the shortcomings of the team.

There is a lot of speculation behind this step taken by the Mumbai Indians franchise just before the mini auction of IPL 2027. Considering the ups and downs in the team’s performance and strategic shortcomings in the last few seasons, the management now wants to enter with a completely new enthusiasm and fresh mindset. Surgery has been done in the coaching staff to give a new edge to the atmosphere of the team’s dressing room and the performance of the players. In the coming days, Mumbai Indians management can announce the inclusion of new and young veterans on these vacant posts, so that the performance of the team can be further strengthened in the upcoming season.
