India’s tremendous world record in the third T20: Fastest team fifty scored in 14 balls, 26 runs scored in the first over.

On New Zealand soil, the young lions of the Indian cricket team have displayed a unique display of aggression and power-hitting that has shaken the records of international cricket. India defeated host New Zealand by 6 wickets in the third match of the five-match T20 International series played on Tuesday, October 27 at Henry Stadium in Wellington. With this resounding victory, the Indian team has captured the trophy by taking an unassailable 3-0 lead in this five-match bilateral series. Talking about the match, the New Zealand team, which came to bat first after losing the toss, scored a strong score of 198 runs in the stipulated 20 overs. The Kiwi team thought that with this big score they would be able to put pressure on India, but the Indian batsmen achieved this target by scoring 199 runs losing 4 wickets in just 13.2 overs.

The fearless and destructive attitude shown by the Indian team while chasing the target stunned the spectators present on the field and sports pundits around the world. During the match, Indian batsmen also registered a new record of scoring the fastest team half-century in the history of men’s T20 International cricket. This win was not only huge in sealing the series, but it also made it clear that the new generation of Indian cricket takes the field in the modern T20 format considering any target as a mere formality. Achieving the target of more than 190 runs with 40 balls remaining has become the biggest feat in international cricket against any full member team.

When India’s new opening pair entered the field to chase the huge target of 199 runs, no one had imagined that the match would be decided in the first few overs. Young opener Abhishek Sharma and his young partner Vaibhav Suryavanshi started a ruthless attack on the Kiwi bowlers from the very first ball of the innings. Abhishek Sharma set a new record by sending the very first ball of the innings outside the boundary line for six runs. Abhishek Sharma now has a unique record of hitting a six on the very first ball of the innings for the record 8th time in T20 International cricket.

In the first over, the Kiwi bowlers had no match to the aggression of Abhishek and Vaibhav. The Indian openers scored a total of 26 runs in the first over with explosive shots. With this, the all-time record of scoring the most runs in the first over during the first innings or run chase of the match in the history of men’s T20 International cricket has also been officially registered in the name of Team India. This stormy start completely destroyed the morale of the New Zealand bowlers from the very first ball and provided the Indian team with a momentum that left the opposition fielders as mere spectators.

The record of being the fastest team to score fifty runs in T20 International cricket has now been formally registered in the name of India. In the third T20 match against New Zealand, the Indian team completed its team fifty in just 2.2 overs i.e. only 14 valid balls. After scoring 26 runs in the first over, there was a flurry of fours and sixes in the second over and India’s score crossed 50 runs on the very second ball of the third over. This is the fastest team half-century ever played between Full Member countries of the International Cricket Council, surpassing all previous global records.

If we talk about the combined records of all the Associate and Full Member teams of world cricket, then the Indian team has now jointly reached the first position. In terms of minimum number of overs, India has equaled the world records of Papua New Guinea and Romania. The official list of fastest team half-centuries by overs in international T20 matches is as follows:

  • 2.2 overs: India vs New Zealand, Wellington (27 October 2026)

  • 2.2 overs: Papua New Guinea v Vanuatu, Port Moresby (2019)

  • 2.2 overs: Romania vs Serbia, Sofia (2021)

  • 2.3 overs: Philippines vs Indonesia, Bali (2023)

  • 2.4 overs: New Zealand vs Scotland, The Oval (2009)

  • 2.4 overs: New Zealand vs England, Auckland (2019)

  • 2.4 overs: South Africa vs West Indies, Centurion (2023)

Compared to full member teams, New Zealand had previously scored 50 runs in 2.4 overs against Scotland in 2009 and against England in 2019, while South Africa had achieved this feat in 2.4 overs against West Indies in 2023. India has defeated all these and achieved this position in 2.2 overs and has achieved the undisputed first position among the full member countries.

The main architect of this incredible run chase was Abhishek Sharma, who played a stormy century of 113 runs in just 38 balls. In his innings he hit 9 fours and 11 skyscraper sixes. Abhishek hit all around the ground and hit excellent shots on the front foot and back foot against the Kiwi fast bowlers. On the other hand, Vaibhav Suryavanshi also supported him by batting fearlessly and never allowed the run rate to go below 15 runs per over in the initial overs. The explosive partnership between the two ruined all the fielding plans of the New Zealand captain.

Although India lost 4 wickets in the middle order, the run rate was so high that there was never any pressure on the tail batsmen. Team India easily crossed the target of 199 runs by losing 4 wickets in 13.2 overs. This match proved that the Indian team is now completely abandoning the traditional approach in T20 cricket and playing with a modern ultra-aggressive mindset. After taking an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series, the Indian team will now aim to clean sweep the Kiwi team at home by winning the remaining two T20 matches.
