There was a stir in a fair organized in Sonari area of Jamshedpur, the industrial city of Jharkhand, when a hair-raising accident took place during the ‘Maut Ka Kuan’ stunt show. A famous female stunt biker, who was performing amazing feats on her bike amid the huge crowd of spectators and thunderous applause, suddenly lost her balance. The bike traveling at high speed collided with the wooden walls of the well and fell straight down and caught fire. In this accident that happened within seconds, the female biker got engulfed in flames and got seriously burnt. Seeing this horrifying scene, an atmosphere of screams and stampede was created among the hundreds of spectators present at the fair. The organizers of the show and the local people immediately risked their lives to take the woman out and immediately admitted her to a nearby hospital. This incident has once again raised big questions on the security arrangements and gross negligence of the organizers of the deadly stunt shows held in fairs.
The ‘Maut Ka Kuan’ show was the main center of attraction for the people in this grand fair held at Ramlila Maidan in Sonari. According to eyewitnesses, cars and bike riders were moving at extremely high speed in a huge cylindrical wooden structure. The main attraction of the show was the lady biker who won the applause of the crowd by performing various risky stunts without leaving her hands. Then suddenly while rotating at a height of about 30 to 40 feet, the rear wheel of the woman’s bike slipped or there was some technical fault in it. The bike went out of control and fell straight into the lowest part of the well, colliding with the wooden planks. As soon as the bike fell, the fuel tank burst and a massive fire broke out. The female biker who fell down along with the bike also got engulfed in the flames, causing smoke and screams in the entire pandal.
As soon as the accident happened, there was chaos among the spectators standing above the well. Other co-artists of the show and the courageous youth present in the fair premises started relief and rescue operations without wasting a moment. He tried to control the fire with the help of bucket water and fire extinguishers and with the help of ladder and ropes, he pulled out the burnt female biker by going down the well. The woman’s face, hands and legs were burnt to a great extent due to the fire. The incident was immediately informed to the local police, after which with the help of an ambulance, the victim was admitted to the burn unit of Tata Main Hospital (TMH), Jamshedpur. According to doctors, the woman’s condition remains critical and a team of specialist doctors is continuously monitoring her by keeping her in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
This accident in Jamshedpur has exposed the security arrangements in dangerous games run in the name of entertainment in fairs and circuses. Local people allege that the organizers had kept aside even the minimum standards of safety in order to earn money. There were neither adequate fire extinguishing equipment available at the show venue nor any medical team or ambulance deployed to deal with emergencies. If the spectators and fellow actors present there had not shown promptness, the woman could have lost her life on the spot. The question is also being raised that how did the district administration and police department allow such a risky stunt show without proper security audit. After the incident, a lot of anger is being seen against the organizers among the people who came to the fair.
As soon as information about the accident was received, the police team of Sonari police station reached the spot and started investigation. The police have stopped the ‘Maut Ka Kuan’ show with immediate effect and the entire area has been barricaded and sealed. Police officials are recording the statements of the fair organisers, the show owner and eyewitnesses. Along with this, the video footage made during the stunt is also being scrutinized so that the exact cause of the accident can be found out. Police officials say that if the investigation reveals any negligence or violation of permission rules on the part of the organizers, then strict legal action will be taken by registering a criminal case against them. After this incident, the administration has also become alert regarding the security arrangements of fairs organized in other areas of the city.
