The controversy that arose over the live show of famous Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehndi during a cultural fair organized in New Tehri, Uttarakhand has now become a topic of nationwide discussion. The first official reaction from Daler Mehndi’s family has now come to light after the state cabinet minister interrupted the singer during his live performance on the fair stage and various speculations spread on social media. Singer’s son Gurdeep Mehndi has broken his silence by coming in front of the media and has clarified the situation by dismissing all the rumors being spread regarding his father’s health. Gurdeep has clarified that his father is completely healthy and is moving ahead with his positive energy. On the other hand, in this entire controversy, many veteran stars of Bollywood and music world are seen standing strongly in support of Daler Mehndi’s respect and art.
This entire incident started during the main cultural evening of ‘Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair’ organized in New Tehri on Sunday night. Daler Mehndi was performing with his popular songs on the stage when Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal intervened in his performance and expressed his displeasure. The minister alleged that the administration and organizing committee had invited a renowned artist on a huge budget to entertain the audience and the local public, but that level of energy and real singing was not being seen on the stage. Soon after, some incomplete video clips started going viral on social media platforms, in which it was claimed that the singer was in an inebriated state and was uncomfortable singing. Although there was no independent confirmation of these claims at any administrative or medical level, the issue sparked heated debate on the Internet.
Amid rumors floating on social media about the singer’s health and alleged drug addiction, his son Gurdeep Mehndi, while talking to a news agency, clarified his father’s condition. Gurdeep avoided making any direct comment on the political controversy that took place on the stage and the minister’s allegations, but he put a full stop to all the misleading news going on about his father’s physical and mental health. Gurdeep said that his father is absolutely fine and he does not have any kind of problem. He said, ‘He is absolutely first class, brilliant and a super hit, and we wish him all the best.’ This simple and positive statement of the son makes it clear that the family wants to focus on the dignity of Daler Mehndi and his musical journey without getting distracted by these controversies.
After the controversy escalated, Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal, while talking to news agency ANI, clarified his position and justified his action. The minister claimed that during the live concert the singers were merely lip-syncing instead of actually singing, which is not befitting of such a big and prestigious artiste. Uniyal said that public money should be properly utilized and any big artist should do complete justice to his art and the audience on the stage. The Minister also made a public claim that Daler Mehndi had been paid a hefty sum of Rs 35 lakh by the organizers and administration to perform at this special event, so the audience expected a quality and live performance.
After this behavior with a senior artiste on stage, the entertainment world has completely rallied in favor of Daler Mehndi. The singer’s younger brother and famous singer Mika Singh was the first to come forward and criticize the minister’s behavior and underlined Daler Mehndi’s decades-long contribution. Apart from this, many prominent personalities including comedy king Kapil Sharma, veteran actor Anupam Kher, comedian Rajpal Yadav and actor Jimmy Shergill have defended Daler Mehndi’s artistic reputation. Artists in the film industry believe that it is a wrong tradition to hold the artist directly responsible for any technical glitch or sound system problem and publicly humiliate him on stage. Daler Mehndi has been the global pioneer of Indian pop and Bhangra music, hence the entire industry seems to be standing strongly with him to protect the honor of the artists.
