When a smartphone is new, it runs like butter, but as time passes and the phone gets old, its speed starts slowing down. Freezing of the screen while opening an app, keyboard getting stuck while typing or suddenly the phone hanging completely is a common problem. Most of the people consider the phone to be old and decide to buy a new mobile. However, in reality, in 90 percent of the cases, the hardware is not damaged, but the heavy cache files accumulated in the operating system, unknown processes running continuously in the background and wrong settings jam the phone’s RAM and processor. If your Android phone has also become slow, then you just have to go to the phone’s settings and make 5 small but effective changes, after which your old phone will also start giving superfast response like a brand new device.
In Android phones, whenever you open, close an app or move from one screen to another, the system plays animations to give you smooth visuals. In older phones this animation puts extra load on the processor, making the phone feel slow. To fix this, first go to ‘Settings’ of the phone and click on ‘About Phone’. Here you will see ‘Build Number’, tap on it rapidly 7 times continuously. By doing this, ‘Developer Options’ will be activated in your phone. Now go back to the main Settings and open ‘Developer Options’ under ‘System’ or ‘Additional Settings’. Scrolling down you will find three options: Window Animation Scale, Transition Animation Scale and Animator Duration Scale. All three are set to 1x by default. Click on these three and reduce them from 1x to 0.5x, or if you want, turn Animation Off completely. Only after this one change, the speed of opening and closing the phone’s apps will immediately start feeling doubled.
Many social media, shopping and gaming apps present in the phone continue to run in the background even after the screen is turned off. They do not allow the phone’s processor to rest even for a moment, due to which the phone starts heating up and the problem of hanging increases. To stop this, scroll down a little further inside ‘Developer Options’, where you will find the option ‘Background Process Limit’. Normally it remains at ‘Standard Limit’, which means that the system can run as many processes in the background as it wants. Change it to ‘At Most 2 Processes’ or ‘At Most 3 Processes’. By doing this, only those 2-3 important tasks which you need will run in the background, due to which the phone’s RAM will always remain free and the mobile will never get stuck during multitasking.
In the last few years, companies have started providing a new feature called ‘RAM Plus’, ‘Virtual RAM’ or ‘Memory Extension’ in smartphones. In this, some part of the phone’s internal storage (like 4GB or 8GB) is used as virtual memory. This feature sounds quite attractive, but the reality is that the read-write speed of the phone’s internal storage is much slower than that of the actual RAM. When the system uses virtual RAM, the constant transfer of data to the storage causes the older phone to lag more. If this feature is on in your phone, then go to ‘Settings’, search for ‘RAM’ or ‘Memory Extension’ and turn this feature ‘Off’. After this restart the phone once; You will find that the system lag has been eliminated to a great extent.
The operating system of any smartphone needs at least 20 to 25 percent free space to load files smoothly. When the internal memory is filled more than 90%, there is no space for system files to move and the phone starts hanging. Go to your phone’s ‘Settings’ > ‘Storage’. Instantly delete unnecessary videos, heavy files and duplicate photos stored in WhatsApp, Telegram and Gallery. Additionally, for the apps you use the most (like Instagram, YouTube, Chrome), go to their settings, open ‘Storage & Cache’ and just press the ‘Clear Cache’ button (be careful not to press Clear Storage, otherwise the app will log out). Clearing the cache regularly removes unnecessary junk data accumulated in GBs and increases the speed of the phone.
Many such system apps and games come pre-installed in the phone which you never use, which are called ‘bloatware’. These apps not only take up storage but also keep sucking data and battery in the background. Go through your phone’s ‘Apps’ list and identify all those useless apps that you haven’t opened in months. ‘Uninstall’ any apps that can be uninstalled immediately. Those system apps that cannot be uninstalled (like the default browser or promotional tools), open them and ‘Disable’ or ‘Force Stop’ them and turn off their ‘Background Data’ permission. By doing this they will not be able to remain active in the background. As soon as you change these 5 settings, your sluggish smartphone will start working lighter, smoother and faster than before.
