World's largest renewable energy park built in India, 5 times bigger than Paris

Gujarat: India now has the world's largest renewable energy park, 5 times larger than Paris. The location is in Khavra, Kutch, Gujarat, where Adani Green Energy Limited will spend around Rs 1.5 lakh crore to generate 30 MW of clean energy.

A small airstrip, where there is not even an air traffic controller to guide the planes. Where in the name of infrastructure only portable toilets and temporary offices are housed in containers. The airstrip was even smaller when in December 2022, Adani Group owner Gautam Adani, then the world's second richest man, took the help of a small plane to reach this desolate wasteland. This area has no pin code and the name of the village also comes from a village 80 km away.

The airstrip became even smaller in December 2022, when Adani Group chief Gautam Adani, then the world's second-richest person, was the first to use a small plane to reach the barren area, in which no It did not even have a pin code, hence its name is derived from it. A village is 80 km away.

Due to the highly alkaline soil, there was no vegetation on the land, leave alone any settlements. But the region with the country's second-best solar radiation after Ladakh and wind speeds five times that of the plains, serves as a dormant location for a renewable energy park.

Nestled amidst the dusty dry land, 18 km from the airstrip, is his group's Khavda Renewable Energy Park, spread over 538 sq km.

When Gautam Adani came to Khawra, he jokingly told the staff of his company that even mosquitoes would not come to this area. Now the company's managing director Vineet Jain said, 'We have just commissioned 2,000 MW (two gigawatt) power capacity in Khavra. Our plan is to add four gigawatt capacity here in the current financial year and five gigawatt capacity every year thereafter. The outer edge of this energy park is just one kilometer away from the international border with Pakistan. There is also an airstrip which is used to transport company officials to and from Mundra or Ahmedabad a few times a week.

There are many challenges in the field

There are many challenges in this area of extremely salty water. Dust storms occur from March to June. There is no communication and transportation infrastructure. The nearest habitable place is also about 80 km away from the energy park. During the rainy season, water does not seep underground and the groundwater here is also saline. Despite these challenges, Adani Group is very enthusiastic about its renewable energy plans. It has set a target of generating 500 GW of electricity from non-fossil sources by the year 2030.

Jain said the Khavra Energy Park will generate 81 billion units of electricity at its peak, which is enough to power countries like Belgium, Chile and Switzerland. Jain said the planned capacity of Khawra Park is 30 GW, of which there will be 26 GW of solar power and 4 GW of wind capacity.

Adani Green Energy's current operational portfolio comprises 7,393 MW of solar, 1,401 MW of wind and 2,140 MW of wind-solar hybrid capacity. The Khawra land is owned by the government, which has leased it to the Adani Group for 40 years. The construction of this energy park started in 2022.
