When retirement age comes after 30 to 35 years of service in government or private sector, the fear of stopping regular salary creates anxiety in the mind of every person. To meet the rising inflation, regular expenditure on medicines and to maintain the lifestyle, every elderly person needs an income which is completely secure, free from market risk (stock market fluctuations) and keeps flowing into the bank account at regular intervals without any interruption. For this financial security of senior citizens, the most reliable and highest return giving scheme of the Central Government is Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS). If a retired person invests ₹ 30 lakh from his Provident Fund (PF) or lump sum fund from gratuity in this scheme, then under the current 8.2 percent annual interest rate of the government, he gets a guaranteed income of ₹ 61,500 sitting at home every three months (quarter).
Senior Citizen Savings Scheme is a small savings scheme supported by the Finance Ministry of the Central Government, which can be opened in any authorized bank (like SBI, PNB, Bank of Baroda) or Post Office branch in the country.
The most unique feature of this plan is its payout model. The annual interest of 8.2% is not paid at the end of the year, but is divided into four equal installments and is credited directly to the investor’s savings account every quarter:
-
First Quarter Payment: 1 April
-
Second Quarter Payment: 1 July
-
Third Quarter Payment: 1 October
-
Fourth Quarter Payment: 1 January
This simply means that the elderly do not have to depend on anyone for their daily household and medical expenses and a lump sum amount is deposited in the account every third month.
While giving relief to senior citizens in the budget, the Central Government has increased the maximum investment limit in SCSS from ₹ 15 lakh. ₹30 lakh Is done. If a retired person utilizes the maximum limit in this scheme, the financial calculations are as follows:
