After the official withdrawal of south-west monsoon, a major change in weather systems is being seen across the country. According to the latest bulletin of India Meteorological Department (IMD), tomorrow i.e. Thursday, October 22, 2026 Weather activities are going to be extremely intense in the peninsular and southern coastal areas of the country. Due to the low-pressure area in the south-western part of the Bay of Bengal and the Tamil Nadu coast and active cyclonic circulation in the south-east Arabian Sea, a widespread period of strong thunderstorms, lightning and torrential rains is beginning in the major states of South India. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for many districts, giving a serious warning of ‘heavy to very heavy rainfall’, especially in Tamil NaduClick to open side panel for more information and KeralaClick to open side panel for more information. On the other hand, in the plains of North and Central India, the effect of drop in night mercury and pink cold of morning and evening is expected to deepen amid dry weather.
According to the Meteorological Department, the maximum weather effect will be seen in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on October 22. Due to the accumulation of moist winds coming from the Bay of Bengal, there is a strong possibility of heavy to very heavy rain with thunderstorms in coastal and delta districts like Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur and Nagapattinam. During this period, strong winds are expected to blow at a speed of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour and for some time their gusts are expected to reach 60 to 65 kilometers per hour. The administration has intensified necessary precautionary measures in view of waterlogging and traffic jams in low-lying areas.
There will be widespread cloud cover in Kerala and Mahe on October 22. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Idukki may receive heavy rains with thunderstorms. Tourists and local residents have been advised to remain cautious in view of the risk of landslides due to incessant rains in the hill valleys of Idukki and Wayanad. Lakshadweep Islands are also expected to witness heavy rainfall and high waves in the sea from October 22 for the next few days. At the same time, in the southern interior part of Karnataka (South Interior Karnataka), which includes Bengaluru, Mysuru and Hassan, a warning of lightning has been issued at many places with light to moderate and at some places heavy rain.
Scattered rain with thunderstorms and strong winds are expected at many places in the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema region on October 22. In Telangana too, light to moderate rain may be recorded in some parts due to formation of local clouds in the afternoon. Along with this, moderate to heavy rains will continue in Andaman and Nicobar Islands also due to the cyclonic effect.
In contrast to the ongoing heavy upwelling over South India, the weather over northwest and central Indian states will remain mainly calm and dry:
-
Delhi-NCR: National capital Delhi, Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad will see bright sunshine during the day on October 22, while the weather will be pleasant and cool at night. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 32 degrees and the minimum temperature is expected to be around 19 degrees Celsius. There is no chance of rain, although morning fog and deterioration in air quality (AQI) may be seen.
-
Uttar Pradesh and Bihar: The sky will be completely clear in both the states. The day temperature in Lucknow, Varanasi, Kanpur and Patna will be 31 to 32 degrees, while the night temperature may fall to 17 to 19 degrees Celsius, due to which the feeling of coolness will increase in the early morning.
-
Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan: There may be light cloud movement in some limited parts of Western Madhya Pradesh and East Rajasthan, but there is no possibility of widespread rain. The weather will be dry during the day and the mercury will drop at night.
There is a warning of gale force winds with a speed of 35 to 45 km per hour (gusts up to 55 to 60 km per hour) in the southwest Arabian Sea, Kerala-Karnataka coasts, Gulf of Mannar and coastal waters of Tamil Nadu. Therefore, the Meteorological Department has strictly advised fishermen not to venture into these marine areas from October 22 to October 24. In areas of heavy rainfall, people have been instructed not to stand under open trees, electric poles and dilapidated buildings and to take shelter in safe pucca houses during lightning. Farmers have been advised to keep the harvested crops in safe places to avoid waterlogging.
