A very painful and shocking news has come to light from Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh amidst the festival of Shardiya Navratri and Durga Visarjan. While on one hand the entire area was immersed in the devotion and joy of Maa Durga, on the other hand, a moment’s carelessness and high speed turned the happiness of many laughing families into mourning. A tractor-trolley full of devotees returning home after immersing the idol of Maa Durga was hit hard by a speeding truck. In this horrific road accident, two devotees died tragically on the spot or during treatment, while eight other people were seriously injured. After this tragic incident, there has been a wave of mourning in the entire area and the people of the victim’s family are crying and in bad condition. The local police administration reached the spot and started relief and rescue operations and the injured were immediately admitted to the nearest hospital. This painful accident has once again raised serious questions on the speed of heavy vehicles on the roads at night and the strict rules of traffic safety.
According to the information received, some people from the villages falling under Motiganj area of Gonda district had gone on tractor-trolley to immerse their local Durga idol with traditional enthusiasm. After completing all the religious rituals and procedures of immersion with full devotion, all the devotees and youth were returning to their homes with the tunes of the DJ and the cheers of the Mother. As soon as his tractor-trolley reached Rajasagara intersection on the designated route, an uncontrolled speeding truck coming from the front hit him. The collision was so severe and terrible that the people riding on the tractor-trolley could not even control themselves and the vehicle was badly damaged. Hearing the loud sound of the collision, nearby villagers and passers-by immediately ran to the spot and informed the police. Despite the darkness, the local people, showing their humanity, immediately started the rescue work at their level and pulled out the injured who were buried under the tractor-trolley and who had scattered and fallen away.
As soon as the information about this terrible road accident was received, the local police station reached the spot and immediately with the help of an ambulance, all the injured were taken to the nearest Community Health Center (CHC). Seeing the serious condition of the injured, the doctors immediately referred them to the District Medical College after providing first aid. According to medical sources, eight people including Nitin, Sonu, Ramkumar, Santram, Rajnarendra, Shivkumar, Rajesh and Santosh were seriously injured in the accident. Despite all the efforts of the doctors, two seriously injured youth – Sanjay and Ashish – died during treatment at the medical college. As soon as the news of the death of these two youths was received, there was chaos in the hospital and screams in their house. The families of the deceased are crying bitterly because they were the sole breadwinners of their families and hard-working youths who used to work as laborers to support their families. Other injured devotees are still being treated under the supervision of experts, some of whom are still in critical condition.
After this painful road accident, big questions are once again being raised on the district administration and police department as to why the movement of heavy vehicles was not completely banned during the festival. After the accident, there was a heavy traffic jam near Rajasagara intersection for about twenty minutes and the traffic was completely disrupted, which was later smoothened by the police after reaching the spot. Police officials said that the truck that collided and the accident-prone tractor-trolley have been seized and the absconding or responsible driver is being searched. The administration has appealed to the people to take special precautions during festivals and immersions and be extra cautious during the movement of heavy vehicles. However, while on one hand the news of death of four other people due to drowning in rivers during immersion in Gonda had already shaken the administration, on the other hand this road accident has turned this holy festival into a deep wound forever. Local people and public representatives are demanding proper compensation for the families of the deceased and strict traffic restrictions to prevent such incidents in future.
