One dark aspect of Mumbai, a city full of glamor and glitz, is that the stars here have always been eyeing the criminal syndicate and underworld. The rapid firing on actor Tiger Shroff’s car in Juhu on the evening of 18 October 2026 has once again revived the old fear in the film industry. Tiger survived the attack safely, but his driver and another person were shot. The operatives associated with Lawrence Bishnoi gang took alleged responsibility for this incident on social media. This is not the first time that a film personality has been directly targeted. From the ‘D-Company’ era of Dawood Ibrahim and Abu Salem in the 90s to the new gangsters operating from social media and jails today, this bloody sequence of Bollywood has been going on for decades.
From time to time, big filmmakers, music directors and A-list actors have faced bullets and threats due to extortion, demand for foreign rights, mutual rivalry or the intention to spread terror. Let us know about those major attacks in the history of Hindi cinema, which shook the entire industry.
The biggest and most frightening face of the bloody terror of the underworld in Bollywood was revealed on 12 August 1997. Cassette King and T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar was coming out after worshiping in Andheri (Jiteshwar Mahadev Temple), Mumbai, when miscreants fired 16 bullets at him in broad daylight. He died a painful death on the spot.
Investigation had revealed that this attack was carried out at the behest of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and Abu Salem. Heavy extortion (protection money) was being demanded from Gulshan Kumar, which he had clearly refused to give. This brutal murder had created such an atmosphere of fear within Bollywood that many big producers and directors had stopped leaving their homes or even picking up the phone.
In the year 2000, Hrithik Roshan’s debut film ‘Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai’ had registered a historic success at the box office. Just a few days after this success, on January 21, 2000, two unknown assailants opened fire on filmmaker Rakesh Roshan outside his office in Santa Cruz, Mumbai. One bullet hit his shoulder and the other near his chest.
He was taken to Lilavati Hospital in critical condition, where doctors performed surgery on time and saved his life. Police investigation revealed that the shooters of underworld don Ali Budesh had carried out the attack with the intention of killing Rakesh Roshan for not giving him a share in the profits from the film’s foreign rights. After this incident, Mumbai Police gave 24-hour commando security to many top filmmakers.
In the nineties and two thousand, not only Gulshan Kumar and Rakesh Roshan, but many big filmmakers came under target. In 1997, director Rajiv Rai, who made blockbuster films like ‘Gupta’ and ‘Mohra’, was shot at by assailants in his office in Tardeo. Rajiv Rai was saved by the intelligence of his security guard, but he was so frightened by this incident that he decided to leave India and settle in Britain.
Similarly, Adlabs founder Manmohan Shetty was shot at in his car in 2000. Ravi Pujari gang had hatched a complete conspiracy to carry out a deadly attack on famous film director Mahesh Bhatt, which was foiled by the Mumbai Crime Branch by arresting the shooters at the last moment. Even producers Sajid Nadiadwala and Yash Chopra used to receive ransom calls from Abu Salem and Chhota Shakeel.
In recent years, after the weakening of the traditional dons of the underworld, the Lawrence Bishnoi gang started terrorizing Bollywood stars. On the morning of 14 April 2024, two bike-riding shooters fired several rounds in rapid succession outside Salman Khan’s Galaxy Apartment in Bandra, Mumbai. Bishnoi gang had been threatening to kill Salman for a long time regarding the 1998 blackbuck hunting case.
After this, in February 2026, four to five rounds of bullets were fired outside the Juhu house of famous action film director Rohit Shetty. The purpose of this firing was also to spread panic and make huge recovery. Apart from this, the thrice firing at comedian Kapil Sharma’s cafe in Canada and the attacks on the foreign locations of Punjabi singers Gippy Grewal and AP Dhillon proved that the film and entertainment industry is still on the direct radar of organized criminal syndicates.
The firing on the BMW car of actor Tiger Shroff while leaving the football ground in Juhu on 18 October 2026 is the latest incident in this series. The attackers who came from among the crowd fired three to four rounds. The bullet hit the car driver Firdaus in the hand and an auto driver passing by was also injured, while Tiger remained completely safe.
After the attack, foreign operatives of Lawrence Bishnoi gang issued a post claiming that Tiger had been given a ‘warning’ after refusing to work with Salman Khan. Maharashtra government and Mumbai Police have intensified the investigation by forming 15 special teams in the case. These incidents from Gulshan Kumar to Tiger Shroff clearly show that behind the shine of the stars, the security threat remains equally sensitive even today.
