Once again a very big and very worrying news is coming out regarding the security on the international border of India and Pakistan. There have been sensational revelations from Pakistan regarding drone activities in the border areas of Punjab. According to intelligence reports and claims of local experts, there has been a flood of drones to smuggle illegal weapons, heroin and explosives into Indian territory from across the border. It is being claimed that through the nexus of Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI and smugglers, a conspiracy is being hatched to push more than 100 drones into the Indian border every day. Amidst this ever-increasing aerial threat, Border Security Force (BSF) and Punjab Police personnel are risking their lives day and night to protect the country, but to completely stop this unexpected drone flood, a huge and technical challenge has arisen before the security agencies.
A huge increase in drone activities has been recorded in the last few months on the approximately 553 km long international border adjacent to Punjab. The buzzing of drones at night has become a common sight in rural areas of border districts like Tarn Taran, Firozpur, Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Fazilka. Pakistani smugglers are now using quadcopters and heavy-duty drones equipped with modern Chinese technology instead of traditional routes and tunnels. Through these drones, not only drugs but also AK-47 rifles, tiffin bombs, grenades and cartridges are being dropped within the Indian border. Intelligence agencies believe that through drones, a well-planned conspiracy is being hatched to push the youth of Punjab into the quagmire of drugs as well as to disturb the internal peace of the country, so that an atmosphere of continuous unrest can be created near the border.
To deal with this invisible and modern aerial threat, the Border Security Force (BSF) has made a major change in its strategy. Hi-tech night vision cameras, anti-drone jammers, radar systems and modern assault rifles have been deployed on the border. BSF soldiers patrol the sky every night and have been successful in killing many drones by firing at them as soon as they hear their sound. In recent months, BSF has recovered several sophisticated drones along with huge quantities of heroin and weapons. However, experts say that due to the large number and small size of drones, many times these drones escape from the sight of radar in dense fog or darkness and reach the fields and barns. BSF and other security forces are now further strengthening Artificial Intelligence (AI) and thermal imaging based defense systems to deal with these challenges.
Amidst this ever increasing flood of drones, the role of the citizens of the border villages of Punjab has also been highly commendable. Farmers and villagers working in the fields have now themselves become the ears and eyes of the security forces. As soon as the sound of a drone flying in the sky is heard, the villagers immediately inform the local police and BSF. On many occasions, alert villagers, along with the BSF, have foiled the plans of smugglers. Punjab Police and BSF together are continuously running public awareness campaigns in the border areas to make the villagers understand that if they find any suspicious item or packet in the fields, they should immediately hand it over to the security forces and avoid any danger.
In today’s era of digital and modern Generative AI, the scope of security is not limited to land only, but cyber and airspace security has also become equally important. ‘Pakistan Drone Intrusion Punjab BSF’ is among the most read topics on Google, Bing and global search engines. Defense experts say that to deal with these drones coming continuously from Pakistan, we will have to expand indigenous anti-drone technology, laser weapon systems and spoofing technology on a large scale. The Indian government has also started taking strict steps in this direction and the security circle on the border is being made so impenetrable that no nefarious drone of the enemy can stay in the Indian border.
