The incident of a woman from the Al Nahyan royal family, the richest and most powerful of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), being found unconscious on a London street has created a stir in the global media. Mahrah Al Nahyan, 32, was found unconscious in a busy area of West London. The most shocking thing was that while she was lying unconscious on the footpath, the three-year old innocent child present with her was moving barefoot, without shoes, towards the dangerous traffic on the road.
The verdict has now come in this high-profile case going on in Southwark Crown Court. The British court considered this to be serious negligence putting the life of an innocent child at risk and after the hearing, it sentenced Mahra Al Nahyan to a 2-year community order with the condition of rehabilitation and also imposed a heavy fine of about £6,114 (about six and a half lakh rupees).
This entire incident happened on June 13, when the movement of vehicles was continuing on the streets of London like normal days. Then some passersby passing by noticed a woman lying unconscious near children’s toys, a scooter and a toy plane lying on the roadside. A drunk man was also lying near an iron grill and a dustbin.
Passersby saw that a three-year-old child was wandering barefoot and was about to be hit by speeding vehicles. People immediately took care of the child and called the police. According to eyewitnesses, when attempts were made to revive Mahra Al Nahyan, she could not react for half an hour. As soon as he regained consciousness, he started shouting at the people present there and said, “This is not a slaughterhouse, why are you guys so worried? Why are you so upset?”
London police reached the spot as soon as information about the incident was received and searched the woman’s bag. Drug paraphernalia was recovered from there. After this, a case of child neglect was registered against him. The prosecutor said in the court that if passersby had not intervened at the right time, the child could have been a victim of a road accident or could have been lost.
On the other hand, Mehra’s lawyer Stephen Vullo KC, while defending in the court, said that his client had not taken drugs directly on the day of the incident, but had taken cocaine a few days before that and had fainted due to extreme fatigue. The lawyer also admitted that Mehra had made a big mistake and now she is completing a 3-month course of drug de-addiction and rehabilitation at the prestigious ‘Priory Centre’ in Surrey.
Let us tell you that the Al Nahyan family of Abu Dhabi is counted among the most prosperous, wealthy and influential royal families in the world. The total wealth of this family is estimated to be more than 250 billion pounds (more than 300 billion dollars). This family has dominance in everything from global investment to oil business. According to documents submitted in the court, Mehra receives a personal allowance of around £8,000 (approximately Rs 8.7 lakh) every month from his household.
During the hearing, judge Mr Justice Johnson KC reprimanded Mehra and said that leaving a small child alone on the road in an intoxicated state was an extremely irresponsible act, which could have posed a serious threat to the child’s life. However, the court sentenced him to community service and a fine, taking into account the drug treatment program he had undertaken and his admission of guilt.
