While on one side of the country tall claims of modernity and development are being made, on the other side the incidents of atrocities and discrimination against people at the bottom of the society, especially Dalits and backward classes, are not stopping. The latest case has come to light from Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, where an incident that puts humanity to shame has happened which has created a sensation in the entire area. A Dalit woman was assaulted and humiliated by bullies in a rural area of Ranchi just because she tried to collect water for drinking from a public well. This cowardly and cruel incident has once again proved to what extent caste mentality and evils like untouchability are still deeply rooted in many parts of the country, due to which there is deep anger in the minds of common citizens.
According to the information received and the complaint lodged in the police station, the victim Dalit woman had gone to collect water from a public and shared well of the village for her household needs as usual. As soon as the woman started drawing water from the well by pouring a bucket, some so-called powerful and upper caste people of the village came there and threatened her. They clearly stopped the woman from drawing water from that well saying that it was for their use and Dalits did not have rights over it. When the victim protested against this and asked to fill the water citing her basic need, the anger of the bullies reached the seventh sky. The accused started misbehaving with the woman and within no time beat her fiercely, due to which she suffered serious injuries.
The matter was not limited to just assault, but the bullies demonstrated their feudal thinking and publicly humiliated the victim woman. Targeting her, they openly used obscene and casteist slurs, which left the woman completely mentally broken. The accused threatened the victim that if she went towards that well again or complained about this incident to anyone, her entire family would be killed and ostracized from the village. Despite such threats, the victim woman showed courage and did not give up and along with her family members went straight to the local police station and lodged a registered complaint against the accused.
As soon as information about this sensational and serious matter was received, Ranchi Police Administration and the local police station swung into action. Based on the complaint of the victim, the police have registered a case against the accused under relevant sections and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Police officials say that no culprit will be spared in this case and soon all the accused will be arrested. At the same time, since this incident came to light, there is a lot of anger among local social organizations, human rights activists and common citizens. People say that even in the twenty-first century, if such incidents of feudal thinking and Dalit oppression are coming to the fore, then it is a serious challenge for our society and justice system. The administration will have to ensure that the victim woman gets justice as soon as possible and such incidents are not repeated in future.
