Jantar Mantar protest controversy and strict legal action by Delhi Police on CJP

Jantar Mantar, the most famous and sensitive protest site of the capital Delhi, has once again become the center of legal and political conflict. Delhi Police has taken a tough stand against the attempts of Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) and their allied activists to enter Jantar Mantar without prior permission and organize a massive protest. The police administration has clearly alleged that the organizers tried to forcibly cross the barricades and infiltrate into the high-security area, ignoring law and order and the rules of Section 144. After this incident, Delhi Police has intensified the investigation process by registering a case under several serious sections and tightening its grip on the organization CJP and the prominent faces associated with it. Police say that any activity that disturbs the peace of the capital and endangers public safety will not be tolerated at all.

On the other hand, during the judicial hearing of this case, the defense lawyers have expressed strong objection to the claims of Delhi Police and have blasted the police theory inside and outside the court. The lawyers representing the senior petitioners—Rankaa and Das—openly told the judge that the affidavits and oral arguments submitted by the Delhi Police in the court were completely baseless and based on ‘blatant lies’. The lead defense counsel argued that his client was exercising his constitutional rights in a completely peaceful manner and had no intention of forcibly entering Jantar Mantar or breaking the law. The lawyers alleged that the police administration was fabricating false stories to hide its administrative failure and to intimidate activists who raised their voice for civil rights.

This entire controversy is no longer limited to just a protest, but has taken the form of a major legal confrontation between civil rights and the state police system. Delhi Police, while presenting its stand in the court, said that it is mandatory to take prior permission for any kind of large gathering at Jantar Mantar so that there is no disturbance to the VVIP movement and the safety of the general public. According to police officials, the CJP representatives did not follow the necessary guidelines and tried to clash with the policemen. On the contrary, civil rights organizations say that Jantar Mantar has been a historic place to raise the voice of dissent in a democracy, where the democratic rights of the common people are being violated by the government continuously imposing strict restrictions.

The role of the court has become extremely important in this high-profile case, where both sides are making serious allegations and counter-allegations against each other. Considering the sensitivity of the case, the court has directed both the parties to submit concrete evidence, CCTV footage and detailed documents. The court has made it clear that neither can anyone be given the right to disturb the peace nor will the police be given the freedom to file false cases against innocent citizens. When the case comes up for hearing in the coming days, it will be interesting to see what evidence the police present to prove their claims and what new legal facts the defense presents to refute the police allegations.
