Jofra Archer returns, Jos Buttler out due to hamstring surgery, young faces get a chance

The England and Wales Cricket Board has officially announced its 16-member ODI and T20 International team to face arch-rival Australia on the cricket field. Many big and surprising changes have been seen in the England team for this high-voltage limited overs series to be held on the fast and bouncy pitches of Australia. The team’s most lethal fast bowler Joffra Archer and emerging young all-rounder Jacob Bethel have made a strong comeback in the limited overs team. On the other hand, experienced wicketkeeper-batsman and former limited overs captain Jos Buttler has been completely ruled out of this important tour due to injury. On this tour, a three-match ODI series followed by an exciting T20 series will be played between the two teams, where the command of England has been handed over to the young and aggressive batsman Harry Brook.

Jos Buttler, the most reliable pillar of England’s white-ball team, has been ruled out of the Australia tour as he had to undergo surgery on a serious hamstring injury suffered earlier this week. Along with Buttler, fast bowler Saqib Mahmood was also not available for selection due to his old knee injury not being completely healed. However, the biggest relief news for England is the return of young sensation Jacob Bethel. Bethel suffered a serious knee injury during the ODI series played against India in July, but he has proved his fitness by successfully completing the rehabilitation process. Along with this, Joffra Archer, who was rested from England’s tri-series in Pakistan under workload management, will now be seen leading England’s fast bowling attack in the ODI matches against Australia.

England cricket team national selector Marcus North shared the selection committee’s approach in detail after the team was announced. Marcus North clarified that the return of Jofra Archer and Jacob Bethel to the ODI team is directly related to long-term preparations for the ICC ODI World Cup to be held in the next one year. He said that the presence of key players will give the team a great opportunity to test its strength and combination in Australian conditions. Along with this, the England Cricket Board has made a strict strategy to control the workload of its fast bowlers. North said that the four leading fast bowlers will leave the team as soon as the ODI series ends, so that they can remain completely fresh and fit before the upcoming very important and tough Test tour of South Africa.

England has adopted a completely different and future-oriented approach for the shortest format of the game i.e. T20 international matches. Key fast bowlers like Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker and Josh Tong have been rested from the T20 series in preference to the upcoming Test tour of South Africa. In the absence of these experienced fast bowlers, the selectors have taken a bold decision to test the young talent on the international stage. Four uncapped players have been included in the team, with 18-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman Thomas Reve and fast bowler Eddie Jack being the prominent names. Thomas Rew successfully led the England team to the final of the ICC Under-19 World Cup in February and has also been offered a central contract by the ECB just a day before the team announcement. Both Rave and Eddie Jack were key parts of the England Lions team that toured Australia last year. On the other hand, explosive opener Phil Salt has fully recovered from a quad injury and has returned to the T20 squad, while Aneurin Donald, who impressed in the 3-0 series clean sweep against Sri Lanka last month, has retained his place and left-arm fast bowler Luke Wood has also been recalled.

National selector Marcus North expressed confidence that the England T20 team, under the leadership of young captain Harry Brook, is currently in great form and full of confidence. He said that playing against one of the best teams in the world in the challenging conditions of Australia would be the best opportunity for England’s young players to prove themselves. Under Harry Brook’s aggressive captaincy style, experienced Test batsmen like Joe Root and Ben Duckett will provide stability in the ODI format, while the spin duo of Liam Dawson and Adil Rashid will be responsible for controlling the Kangaroo batsmen in the middle overs.
