Tomorrow’s weather, October 13: Active Western Disturbance will spoil the mood! Alert of strong storm, rain and lightning in 15+ states including Delhi-NCR and Punjab

In the second fortnight of October, while the pink cold was gradually beginning in North India, a new and intensely active Western Disturbance has completely changed the seasonal equations. According to the latest bulletin of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), due to the effect of this system active over the north-western Himalayan region and the cyclonic circulation over Haryana and bordering western Uttar Pradesh, the weather will change in large parts of North India on October 13. Due to this, a yellow/orange alert has been issued for thunderstorms and intermittent rain in many parts of Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Western Uttar Pradesh and North Rajasthan. In many areas, the wind speed can reach 50 to 60 kilometers per hour, due to which the temperature will drop by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius and a slight coolness will be felt even during the day.

There will be dense clouds in the sky on October 13 in the entire NCR (Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad) including the national capital Delhi.

  • Wind speed and storm risk: According to the Meteorological Department, strong dusty winds can blow at a speed of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour in the afternoon and evening, which can reach up to 60 km/hour in gusts.

  • Rain and thunder: There is a strong possibility of light to moderate rain and thundershowers at some places in the central, southern and eastern areas of Delhi.

  • Temperature and Air Quality: The maximum temperature can drop to 31 to 33 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature can be recorded around 20 to 21 degrees Celsius. Due to rain and strong winds, the dust particles present in the air will be washed away, due to which the Air Quality Index (AQI) will remain in the ‘satisfactory’ to ‘moderate’ category.

The direct impact of western disturbance will be most visible on the border districts of Punjab and Haryana.

  • Sensitive districts of Punjab: Meteorologists have issued warnings of thunderstorms and rain with severe thunderstorms in Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala and Chandigarh. In open and rural areas, strong storms can cause damage to electrical wires and unpaved structures.

  • Condition of Haryana: Scattered to widespread rain and strong winds with a speed of 50 km per hour are expected in North and Central Haryana including Ambala, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Rohtak, Hisar and Panipat on October 13. This change in weather will provide complete relief from humidity, but the worries of farmers harvesting paddy may increase.

This seasonal movement is not going to be limited to just two states; Its mixed effect will also be visible in the surrounding states:

  1. Western Uttar Pradesh: There are chances of light rain with thunder and lightning and gale speed of 40 to 50 km/hr in Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Shamli, Baghpat and Bulandshahr. Central and Eastern UP (Lucknow, Kanpur, Prayagraj and Varanasi) will remain partly cloudy and the weather will remain mainly dry and hot.

  2. Rajasthan: In North and Western Rajasthan (Sriganganagar, Hanumangarh, Bikaner and Churu), winds will blow at a speed of 30 to 40 km/hour and there may be drizzle at some places.

  3. Hill States (Himachal, Uttarakhand and Kashmir): There is a possibility of light to moderate rain in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand and light snowfall on the higher peaks. Passengers traveling on hilly routes have been advised to take extra caution in view of landslides and slippage.

In view of this sudden change in weather, agricultural scientists and disaster management authority have issued important guidelines for the general public and farmers:

  • Protection of paddy and Kharif crops: Farmers who have harvested paddy, millet or cotton and kept it in the fields or barns should immediately take it to safe warehouses or cover it well with tarpaulin and tie it so that the grains do not get wet due to strong wind and rain.

  • Stop irrigation and pesticide spraying: Avoid doing new irrigation or spraying any type of chemical pesticides in the standing crops for the next 24 to 48 hours.

  • Protection from lightning: Do not stand in fields, open fields, big trees or under iron electric poles during rain and severe thunderstorms.

  • road safety: In case of storm and sudden reduced visibility, two-wheeler and four-wheeler drivers should slow down their speed and avoid unnecessary travel.

The Meteorological Department says that by the evening or late night of October 13, the main effect of the western disturbance will go beyond the plains, after which the sky will start clearing from October 14 and the cold wave will deepen in North India with a rapid drop in night temperatures.
