‘Free hand to RSS’, Rahul Gandhi’s scathing attack

These days, sharp statements and political activities are at their peak in Indian politics. Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi has once again made a direct and aggressive attack on the central government and law and order. Rahul Gandhi, while sharing some sensational videos on social media platforms, has made a serious claim that Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has been given complete ‘freedom’ in the country and the police administration has been given clear orders to lathi charge the youth and protesting citizens and beat them mercilessly. After these statements and videos of the Congress leader came to light, the political atmosphere across the country has become heated and a war of words has once again broken out between the ruling party and the opposition.

The video shared by Rahul Gandhi shows scenes of policemen allegedly being harsh and assaulting some youth and protesters. While sharing these videos, Rahul Gandhi targeted the Central Government and said that today the democratic rights of the youth of the country are being strangled. He says that when the youth raise their voice for their future, employment and constitutional rights, instead of listening to them, the administration tries to suppress their voice with the use of sticks and force. He alleged that the ideologically motivated state machinery is being used to suppress citizens, which is a very worrying sign for any healthy democracy. The Congress Party also argues that a dangerous trend of criminalizing every voice of dissent is increasing within the country.

Immediately after this attack by Rahul Gandhi, there has been a huge uproar in the political circles. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies have termed these statements of Rahul Gandhi as completely baseless, misleading and a planned conspiracy to tarnish the image of the country. Leaders of the ruling party say that Rahul Gandhi every time works to demoralize the country’s democratic institutions, police forces and judiciary. BJP spokespersons argue that it is the duty of state governments and police administration to maintain law and order, and when some people take law into their hands or damage public property, the police have to perform their duty. He alleged that the Congress party, seeing its political ground slipping, is playing politics of spreading confusion in the society by making such sensational allegations.

This entire incident has once again sparked a serious debate across the country on freedom of expression, police reforms and the rights of democratic protest. Many civil society organizations and human rights activists have also expressed their concern over this issue. He believes that this increasing conflict between the police force and the public is not a good sign for the social fabric of the country. Such conflicts between increasing unemployment among the youth and dissatisfaction with the system can become a big challenge for political and social stability in the times to come. However, this latest claim of Rahul Gandhi has increased the electoral and political temperature considerably, and in the coming days, there can be a huge uproar on this issue from Parliament to the streets.
