
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is one of the largest and most modern rapid transit systems in the country, carrying millions of passengers every day. To keep the journey safe, smooth and convenient for all, strict rules have been made under the Delhi Metro Railway (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002. Often, due to lack of information or carelessness, passengers sit on the floor inside the metro, start eating food in the coach, or male passengers enter the reserved women’s coach. Flying squads and safety checking teams immediately levy fines on such violations. It is very important to know the main rules and penalty rates of DMRC to avoid any kind of legal and financial trouble during the journey.
While traveling long distances in metro coaches, many passengers sit on the floor if they do not get a seat, while some people start eating snacks or food during the journey itself. As per DMRC rules, sitting on the floor of the coach creates hindrance to the movement of other passengers and affects evacuation in case of emergency. There is a risk of spreading dirt and foul smell by eating food or drinking anything inside the coach.

Sitting on the floor: It comes under the category of nuisance under Section 59 of the Delhi Metro Act. For this on the traveler fine of ₹200 Is imposed.

Eating/Littering/Spitting: Eating food openly, throwing garbage or spitting is prohibited inside the metro. If found doing so fine of ₹200 are imposed and travel tickets or smart cards may be confiscated.
The first coach (in the direction of travel) of every Delhi Metro train is reserved exclusively for women passengers.

Rule: Only female passengers and their children below 12 years of age can travel in this coach. Entry of any adult male passenger is completely prohibited.

Fine: If a male passenger is found traveling in a female coach, he will be booked under section 64. fine of ₹250 Is imposed. With this, he is removed from the coach at the next station and if he argues or protests, he can be handed over to CISF or Delhi Metro Police.
Traveling in the metro premises without a valid ticket or token is a punishable offence. If a passenger is caught entering the system by jumping the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gate or in any other illegal manner, then:

The details of fines fixed for various violations to maintain safety and decorum inside DMRC premises and trains are as follows:

Drunkenness & Misbehaviour: Fine up to ₹500 and confiscation of ticket/pass.

Walking on Metro Tracks: Fine up to ₹500 or jail up to 6 months.

Carrying Dangerous Goods: Fine up to ₹5,000 and imprisonment up to 4 years.

Defacing property or pasting posters: Fine up to ₹1,000 or jail for 6 months.

Misuse of Alarm/PEB: Pressing the emergency button without a valid emergency attracts a fine of ₹1,000 or 1 year in jail.
While traveling in Delhi Metro, always use the designated seats and leave the seats reserved for disabled, elderly and pregnant women vacant. Listen to music only by wearing headphones inside the metro coach so that other passengers are not inconvenienced.
