The weather is once again going to take a big turn amid the farewell of October and the beginning of pink cold in the plains of North and Central India. India Meteorological Department (IMD), while issuing its latest forecast, has warned that due to the collision of an intense Western Disturbance active in the Himalayan region and moist easterly winds rising from the Bay of Bengal, the weather is going to worsen in at least six states of the country. There is a strong possibility of strong storm with a speed of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour, heavy thunder and sporadic hailstorm in many parts of Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh including the national capital Delhi and the entire NCR region. Due to this unexpected change in the weather, on one hand there will be a direct drop of 3 to 5 degrees Celsius in the day temperature, on the other hand there is a danger of sudden strong winds and hailstorm causing huge damage to Kharif crops and ripe paddy ears standing in open fields.
There will be dense cloud movement in the national capital Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad during the next 48 to 72 hours. According to the Meteorological Department, many areas of Delhi-NCR may receive moderate to heavy rain with strong thunderstorms in the afternoon or late evening. During this period, stormy dusty winds are expected to blow at a speed of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour, due to which tree branches are likely to break and traffic may be affected. Talking about temperature, the maximum temperature in Delhi may drop below normal and be recorded between 30 to 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature will remain around 20 degrees Celsius. Due to this period of strong winds and rain, there will be an immediate improvement in the Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi-NCR, but due to increase in coolness and humidity in the air, the effect of mist and fog in the morning can also deepen.
The most widespread impact of this weather system can be seen in the agricultural states of Punjab, Haryana and North Rajasthan of North-West India. There is a possibility of hailstorm along with strong thunderstorm in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Bathinda of Punjab and Ambala, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Hisar and Rohtak of Haryana. There has been a warning of dust storm and lightning in Shekhawati region of Rajasthan – Sikar, Jhunjhunu, Churu as well as Jaipur, Bikaner and Alwar districts. In view of the danger of hailstorm, meteorologists have advised to immediately cover the sacks of paddy and millet kept in the open in the markets in safe places or with tarpaulin. Farmers have been appealed to avoid spraying any kind of chemical pesticide or additional irrigation in the crops until the weather becomes normal.
The impact of the cyclonic circulation of the Bay of Bengal will be clearly felt in the plains of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Major cities of eastern Uttar Pradesh—Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Ayodhya and Gomti Nagar and Hazratganj areas of the capital Lucknow—are likely to experience intermittent heavy showers and gusty winds at speeds of 40 to 50 km per hour. The possibility of sporadic rain and hailstorm with thunder and lightning cannot be ruled out in Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Moradabad, Aligarh and Agra in western Uttar Pradesh. Talking about Bihar, yellow alert has been issued in Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur and Darbhanga regarding thunder and lightning strike. Local disaster management authorities have advised the general public and especially people in rural areas not to take shelter under trees or near electric poles during severe thunderstorms and lightning.
Due to the effect of western disturbance, fresh snowfall of the season is going to start in the high altitude areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. White blanket of snow has started spreading on the high peaks of Rohtang Pass, Lahaul-Spiti, Manali and Kinnaur of Himachal and Badrinath, Kedarnath, Hemkund Sahib and Pithoragarh of Uttarakhand. Due to the snowy and cold northern winds coming from the mountains, the temperature in the plains will drop rapidly. According to meteorologists, as soon as this period of rain and hailstorm ends, the pink cold of night and early morning in North India will suddenly gain momentum and people will start feeling the need of light and warm clothes.
