Mood changed amid departure of monsoon: New alert of storm and rain across the country

With the beginning of the second fortnight of October, a big change is being seen in the weather of the country. While on one hand the process of withdrawal of South-West Monsoon is going on from North-West India, on the other hand, the new Western Disturbance active in the Himalayan region and the Cyclonic Circulation over the Bay of Bengal have together reactivated the weather system. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of severe thunderstorm, lightning and torrential to moderate rain in more than 17 states of the country for Monday, October 12, 2026. During this period the wind speed can reach 40 to 60 kilometers per hour. Due to this sudden change in the weather, while there will be a drop in the humid day temperature, the rosy cold of morning and evening will also intensify in the plains of North India.

Cloudy movement will continue in the national capital Delhi and the entire NCR region (Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad) on Monday. According to the Meteorological Department, there is a forecast of sporadic rain with strong thunderstorms and stormy winds at a speed of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour in Delhi on October 12. The maximum temperature in the capital can be recorded around 32 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature can be recorded around 21 degrees Celsius. The weather conditions will remain quite bad in Punjab and Haryana also. An alert of moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorm has been issued in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Gurdaspur and Chandigarh-Mohali belt of Punjab. To protect the paddy harvested in the fields and the crops kept in the markets from getting wet, farmers have been strictly advised to take special precautions and cover the harvested crop with tarpaulin.

In Chhattisgarh, the main state of Central India, the weather has taken a complete turn due to the moist winds coming from the Bay of Bengal. Yellow alert has been issued for heavy rains and lightning along with thunderstorms on October 12 in many districts of Bastar, Raipur, Bilaspur, Surguja and Durg divisions of Chhattisgarh. Meteorologists have warned that farmers and villagers working in open fields should not stand under trees or near electric poles during bad weather. At the same time, in the eastern and northern parts of Madhya Pradesh—like Rewa, Shahdol, Jabalpur and Gwalior-Chambal division—there is a possibility of strong wind gusts at a speed of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour and sporadic rain, while in Bhopal and Indore the weather will remain pleasant due to partly cloudy sky.

The weather remains moist due to the cyclonic circulation formed in the lower atmosphere in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. Districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh—such as Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Ayodhya and the capital Lucknow—are expected to experience thunderstorms with movement of clouds and winds at speeds of 40 to 50 km per hour on October 12. The maximum temperature in Lucknow is expected to be 32 degrees and the minimum temperature will be 22 degrees Celsius. Light to moderate rain may also be recorded in Meerut, Aligarh and Agra of western UP. Talking about Bihar, there is a possibility of rain with strong winds in Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur and Purnia. Intermittent rains with gusts of up to 50 kmph may continue in Ranchi, Jamshedpur and Dhanbad of Jharkhand.

The weather conditions remain harsh from North to South India. In South Peninsular India, Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Coastal Karnataka are under alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall due to early signs of Northeast Monsoon and the impact of the cyclonic system. Fishermen in these areas have been warned not to venture into the sea. On the other hand, in the northern hilly states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, due to western disturbance, a huge drop in temperature has been recorded due to snowfall in the high altitude areas and rain along with strong thunderstorms in the low-lying areas. The mercury is falling rapidly in Dehradun and Shimla, due to which the effect of cold is going to increase rapidly in the coming days in the hilly areas as well as in the plains.
