A historic and big development has come to light from the politics and infrastructure corridor of Uttar Pradesh. Preparations to change the name of the most ambitious project of the National Capital Region (NCR) ‘Noida International Airport’ i.e. Jewar Airport have been completed. In the cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at Lok Bhawan in Lucknow, the formal proposal to name Jewar Airport after the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been approved. The proposal, passed unanimously by the state cabinet, is now being sent to the Union Civil Aviation Ministry and the Central Government for final approval and official gazette notification. There were discussions going on in political circles for a long time regarding the naming of Jewar Airport, which is going to be among the largest airports in Asia, on which the Uttar Pradesh government has now officially given its consent.
In the high-level cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, many important agendas regarding overall industrial development of the state, expansion of aviation hub and connectivity were approved. The most prominent agenda among these was the formal naming of Jewar International Airport. According to senior ministers and spokespersons of the state government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership has played a historic role in giving India modern infrastructure, expressway network and world-class aviation sector. The concept of Jewar Airport, which will give a new industrial identity to Western Uttar Pradesh on the global stage, the record progress from land acquisition to construction could have been possible only under the guidance of the Prime Minister. As a symbol of this contribution and gratitude, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to dedicate this greenfield international airport after the Prime Minister. After the approval of the Cabinet, the Civil Aviation Department has started the process of sending the related formal documents to the Central Government.
This international airport, being developed in Jewar area of Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida) district, is going to become the country’s first net-zero emission (carbon neutral) airport. Once completely ready, it will be Asia’s largest airport and the world’s fourth largest airport with six runways. The first phase of the project is being developed to handle 1.2 crore (12 million) passengers annually, which will reach 7 crore passengers on completion of the upcoming phases. With the opening of this airport, not only will the pressure of aircraft and passengers at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI Airport) be reduced by 30 to 40 percent, but lakhs of passengers from the districts of western Uttar Pradesh – Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Meerut, Mathura and Agra will get the facility of international and domestic flights directly near their homes.
The most unique feature of Jewar Airport is its modern multimodal connectivity. Dedicated interchanges have been created to directly connect the airport to Yamuna Expressway and Eastern Peripheral Expressway. Apart from this, work on the link road connecting the airport to Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is also going on war footing. An extension of Namo Bharat (RRTS) and Rapid Rail is proposed to connect the airport complex to Greater Noida and Delhi Metro networks. For the convenience of domestic and foreign tourists and industrialists, a plan has also been prepared to run India’s first Pod Taxi (Personal Rapid Transit) from the airport to the Film City. On the cargo and logistics front, Jewar Airport will prove to be India’s largest logistics gateway, from where goods from North India can be sent directly to markets around the world.
After the Yogi Cabinet passed the proposal to change the name of Jewar Airport, the rhetoric in the political circles has also intensified. The ruling party has called it a historic honor towards the vision of the Prime Minister and the modern reconstruction of the country, while the opposition parties have started giving their political reactions on it. However, local business and industrial organizations have welcomed the decision. The industry believes that the naming of Jewar Airport and its early commercial operation will bring an influx of foreign investment in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) area. Mega projects like Electronics Manufacturing, Data Centres, Medical Device Park, Textile Hub and Film City will create new direct and indirect employment opportunities for lakhs of youth in Western Uttar Pradesh in the coming years.
