It is not necessary to buy mobile for free ration: Food and Logistics Department refutes misleading news on social media

Lucknow, 09 October. The Uttar Pradesh Food and Logistics Department has put an end to the rumors being spread on social media about purchasing a new mobile and making OTP verification mandatory to get free ration. In the clarification issued by the department’s Additional Commissioner Satyadev, it has been said that there is no need for any beneficiary to buy a new mobile to get free ration. The department has appealed to the general public not to pay attention to such misleading information.

Biometric and Iris scan are the main basis, rules have not changed

According to the Food and Logistics Department, ration is being distributed in a transparent manner like before by weighing it through electronic weighing scale through e-POS machines installed at fair price shops in the state. If a beneficiary’s fingerprint does not match the first time, he or she is given two additional chances on the same day. Even after this, if there is no biometric authentication, the option of iris scan is available. Apart from this, any other member of the family registered in the ration card can get food grains after getting the verification done.

OTP is only an alternative system for the elderly and disabled, it is not mandatory to get a new phone.

The department has clarified that the facility of OTP based distribution is not a new system, but has been in effect since 2017 after the implementation of the National Food Security Act. This facility is an alternative solution only for those extremely old, disabled or seriously ill ration card holders for whom biometric or iris matching is not possible. According to the data, out of more than 3.41 crore ration cards in the state, OTP based distribution has been done on only 83,093 cards, which is a negligible part of the total transactions. Therefore, the talk of buying a new mobile for this is completely baseless and misleading.
