Today, October 9, 2026, Friday, with the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month, is being considered very important and especially fruitful from the religious point of view. Today, in the last phase of Pitru Paksha, there is a ritual of Chaturdashi Shraddha, which is also known as ‘Ghat Chaturdashi’ or ‘Ghayal Chaturdashi’ in folk tradition and scriptures. Along with this, due to it being Friday, there is a rare coincidence of special worship of Goddess Lakshmi, the presiding deity of wealth, glory and opulence. According to Hindu scriptures, if Tarpan and Pind Daan are performed for the ancestors on this day as prescribed in the scriptures, then the ancestors who died untimely death get peace and many troubles coming to the family are averted.
According to the scriptures, the Shraddha of Ashwin Krishna Chaturdashi is considered quite different from the normal Shraddha dates and is considered extremely sensitive. This date is especially dedicated to the tarpan and salvation of those ancestors of the family who died due to any accidental accident, injury by weapon, consumption of poison, drowning in water, snake bite, fire or any kind of non-death or suicide. It is believed that to satisfy the souls of such ancestors, even if they died on any other date, their Shraddha rituals are performed on this Chaturdashi date only. On this day, by providing food to Brahmins, doing Panchabali Karma (giving food to cow, dog, crow, goddess and ant) and donating food and clothes to the needy, one gets relief from Pitra Dosh and an atmosphere of happiness and peace is established in the family.
Today being Friday, along with remembering the ancestors, it is also a good opportunity to seek the blessings of Goddess Mahalakshmi and the goddess of wealth. According to religious beliefs, offering red or white flowers, kheer, makhana and batasha to Goddess Lakshmi on Friday eliminates financial constraints, debt and poverty. Lighting lamps of pure cow ghee on both sides of the main entrance of the house in the evening i.e. during twilight brings positive energy into the house and becomes the permanent abode of Goddess Lakshmi. On this day, one should avoid any kind of dispute in the family and respect the women of the house, so that Goddess Lakshmi’s mercy remains.
The middle of the day i.e. afternoon is considered the best time for offering tarpan to ancestors, Pind Daan and Brahmin food. Today, according to the Panchang, three major and extremely fruitful auspicious times are fixed for performing Chaturdashi Shraddha. The first ‘Kutup Muhurta’ will be from 11:30 am to 12:17 pm, which is considered best to start the Shraddha rituals. After this, ‘Rouhin Muhurta’ will be effective from 12:17 pm to 01:04 pm. After these two Muhurtas, ‘Aprahan Kaal’ will last from 01:04 PM to 03:24 PM, during which all the necessary rituals of Shraddha, Tarpan and Pind Visarjan can be performed.
