When she chased away the moneylenders with a sickle and went out alone into the dense forests in search of her husband.

As many stories are related to the struggle of Shibu Soren i.e. ‘Guruji’ behind the soil of Jharkhand, the battle for water, forest and land there and the foundation of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), equally untold and adventurous chapters have been related to the life of his better half Rupi Soren. Recently, when Rupi Soren merged into Panchatattva and was bid her last farewell on the same holy land of Nemra where the memories of Guruji are still alive, the whole of Jharkhand is remembering this brave mother with tears in her eyes. If we look back at the pages of history, Rupi Soren was not just an ordinary housewife, but she was the silent strength of Guruji’s difficult political and social struggle, who bravely faced every storm behind the scenes. There came a time when she single-handedly raised the sickle against the atrocities of the moneylenders and drove them away and, escaping from the eyes of the police and administration, searched the dangerous and dense forests of Jharkhand in search of her husband Shibu Soren. Let us know the whole saga of those unheard and hair-raising adventurous moments of Rupi Soren’s life, which even today awakens a feeling of respect in the heart of every Jharkhand resident.

There was a time in the rural areas of Santhal Pargana and Jharkhand when the terror of moneylenders and moneylenders had increased to such an extent that the lands and crops of the poor were snatched away, and the tribals were tortured when they protested. At that time, when Shibu Soren raised the bugle against the ‘Mahajani system’ and started the movement, innumerable dangers and enemies stood in his way, in the face of which Rupi Soren always showed his rock-solid strength. Once, when some cruel moneylenders of the village came to forcibly take over the produce and lands of the farmers and Shibu Soren was not present at home at that time, instead of hiding in fear, Rupi Soren herself came out of the house, took a sickle in her hand and single-handedly chased away those bullies. Seeing this fearless and aggressive look of hers, not only the moneylenders were surprised but also the people of the entire area were awakened in the belief that this woman standing with Guruji was not an ordinary woman but was the embodiment of a Ranchandi who would never bow down to injustice.

When Shibu Soren was running an underground movement to get the rights of the exploited and deprived society of Jharkhand, then on the lines of British rule, the administration and police were searching day and night for him and his family was also being continuously harassed. There came many such days and nights when for months there was no trace of Shibu Soren in which forest or cave he was hiding, and then what Rupi Soren did for the concern of the family and the safety of her husband became immortal in the pages of history. Without worrying about her small children, in the dark of night, without worrying about wild animals and police guns, she would go out alone into those dangerous and dense forests of Jharkhand where even birds could not kill. While searching the forests and hiding in the mud houses of the tribals, she used to convey messages to her husband and arrange food and essential items for him, which was the biggest proof of her immense courage and unwavering love.

Today, when Rupi Soren is no longer physically with us and her last rites have been performed right next to the Samadhi site of Guruji in Nemra village, the whole of Jharkhand is feeling that it has lost one of its mentors who had laid the foundation of the state’s construction behind the scenes. This is a situation like a thunderbolt for Hemant Soren and the entire family, but the values and lessons of struggle given by Rupi Soren will always guide the future generations of Jharkhand. She never craved for power or fame, but by always living like a simple rural woman, she proved that the real strength lies not in palaces but in the character which remains connected to its soil even in the face of storms. We pray to God that the soul of this great heroine rests in peace and that her inspirational life always shines in golden letters in the pages of history.
