Jharkhand High Court fines Rs 10,000 on CM Hemant Soren, stay request on petition of ED officials becomes the reason

A big news is coming out from the political and judicial corridors of Jharkhand. Jharkhand High Court on Thursday (October 1) imposed a financial fine of Rs 10,000 on state Chief Minister Hemant Soren. This tough stance of the court was seen when a petition filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials on behalf of the Chief Minister’s lawyer was requested for adjournment during the hearing.

This entire matter is related to the search conducted by the ED team at the official residence of Chief Minister Hemant Soren in Delhi in the year 2024 and the legal disputes arising thereafter. After this order of the court, the market of discussions has become heated at the administrative and political level.

The controversy started when Enforcement Directorate officials had searched the residence of CM Hemant Soren in Delhi in connection with the investigation of money laundering case. After this action, Chief Minister Hemant Soren had seriously accused the officials of the Central Investigation Agency of mentally torturing and harassing him. He said that since he belongs to the tribal community, he is being deliberately targeted in this way.

On the basis of this complaint, last year i.e. on January 31, 2024, an official first information report (FIR) was registered in the SC/ST police station of Ranchi, against which the ED officials had approached the High Court.

In their petition, ED officials had challenged that the criminal proceedings going on against them should be dismissed. The officers had also challenged the notice issued by the police station, under which they were asked to appear in person before the investigating officer (IO) of the case.

Earlier, while hearing the petitions filed by ED officers Kapil Raj, Devvrat Jha, Anupam Kumar and Aman Patel, the court had issued an official notice to CM Hemant Soren and the state government on March 4, 2024, seeking their response. The court had also directed that no coercive action should be taken against the ED officials till the next hearing of the case.

On Thursday, when the hearing of this case was going on in the court, Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s lawyer once again requested to postpone the case. Expressing strong displeasure over this, Jharkhand High Court clarified that adjournment has been requested in this case several times before.

Taking a strict stance, the court has given strict instructions to Chief Minister Hemant Soren to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 to the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority (JALSA). Along with this, the High Court has fixed November 2 for the next hearing of this important case, on which everyone’s eyes will be fixed.
