Almora district, situated on the beautiful valleys of Uttarakhand and the holy land of Devbhoomi, is not only famous for its natural beauty, but the ancient religious places present here have been a center of immense curiosity for both scientific researchers and devotees for centuries. Located amidst the beautiful hills of Almora, the Trinetra Mahadev Temple complex is famous throughout the country for its unique Nagar style architecture and miraculous powers. The biggest and astonishing feature of this temple complex is that cement, mortar, lime or any chemical mixture has not been used to connect the group of 16 ancient temples present here.
The heavy stones of these temples, carved during the Katyuri and Chand dynasties, have been placed in slots on each other only with the help of ‘inter-locking’ technique in such a way that despite hundreds of years of earthquakes, severe cloud bursts and seasonal storms, they are still standing intact. According to local folk beliefs, this entire complex is blessed with a divine shield of spiritual energy which never allows its original form to be destroyed.
The second biggest miracle of the Trinetra Mahadev Temple complex is a natural sacred water reservoir established here, which is considered by the local villagers and priests as a ‘natural barometer’ of the weather. Centuries before the advent of modern meteorological radar and satellite systems, local people used to accurately predict the coming rain, drought or change in weather by looking at the water of this pond.
-
Mysterious movement in water level: The water level of this pond suddenly starts rising 24 to 48 hours before any major change in the weather or torrential rains.
-
Hint of color and bubbles: If there is a possibility of excessive rainfall or natural disaster in the area, micro bubbles start rising from the bottom of the pond and the color of the water starts turning light grey.
-
Identifying drought and normal weather: In normal and clear weather, the water of the pond remains absolutely calm, transparent and shines like glass.
Scientists believe that this water body is extremely sensitive to changes in mountain geological pressure and atmospheric humidity, making it a natural indicator of weather.
According to mythological beliefs, Lord Shiva resides in this holy place in his Trinetra form in both incorporeal and corporeal forms. It is said that in Treta and Dwapar Yuga, great sages had performed rigorous penance in this peaceful valley of the Himalayas, pleased with which Devadhidev Mahadev himself appeared here and assumed the form of Jyotirlinga.
Devotees have an unwavering belief that any devotee who bathes or bathes in this holy water with full devotion and offers Bilvapatra and Ganga water to Trinetra Mahadev, all the planetary defects, Kaalsarp defects and the fear of untimely death present in his horoscope are eliminated forever. Especially during Mahashivratri, Sawan month and Somvati Amavasya, a huge crowd of devotees gather here.
