Income Tax Audit last date extended till October 21, big relief to taxpayers; Know when will ITR be filed now?

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has given major relief to businessmen, companies and professionals conducting tax audit for the assessment year 2026-27 (financial year 2025-26). Under the Income Tax Act, the last date for submission of Tax Audit Report (Tax Audit Report – Form 3CA/3CB-3CD), which was earlier fixed as 30th September, has now been extended. 21st October Has been done.

This announcement, which came just before the festive season, has brought a sigh of relief to lakhs of businessmen, corporates and Chartered Accountants (CAs) across the country. Various trade organizations and professional bodies had strongly demanded extension of the deadline citing heavy load on the Income Tax Department portal, technical bottlenecks and huge work of GST and TDS reconciliation. Taking cognizance of these practical difficulties, CBDT has provided an extension of 21 additional days.

As the date of tax audit report increased, the biggest question was what would be the last date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR) for such taxpayers. As per the rules, only after filing the tax audit report, the concerned person or institution can finally submit its income tax return.

CBDT has clarified that the last date of ITR filing for taxpayers subject to tax audit (cases falling under Explanation 2 to section 139(1)) which was earlier 31st October, has also been extended. 21 November Has been done. That means taxpayers will get one full month’s additional time to file returns after submitting the audit report.

Type of Compliance predetermined deadline New last date announced
Submission of Tax Audit Report (Form 3CA/3CB-3CD) 30 September 21st October
Income Tax Return (ITR) Filing (Audit Case) 31st October 21 November
Transfer Pricing (TP Cases – Form 3CEB/ITR) 31 October (Report) / 30 November (ITR) as is (unchanged)

It is important to note that this relief is not generally applicable to all categories of taxpayers:

Tax experts and chartered accountants say that this moratorium of 21 days is very important, but taxpayers should avoid procrastinating till the last date. Reconciliation of bank accounts, complete reconciliation of data from Form 26AS, AIS, TIS and GST portal is required during tax audit.

Due to increase in server load on the e-filing portal in the last days, there are problems in OTP verification and attaching digital signature (DSC). Therefore, contact your auditor and get the audit report approved in time and file your ITR before November 21, so that you can avoid unnecessary financial burden of interest and late fees charged under Section 234A.
