In a very important and aggressive press conference held in the national capital New Delhi, senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi has opened a direct front regarding the impartiality of the Election Commission and the functioning of the Central Government. Focusing on the famous ‘SIR controversy’ related to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and the internal working of the Election Commission, Rahul Gandhi claimed that an organized effort is going on to destroy the basic structure of democracy and the Constitution in the country. He alleged in clear words that for the last several years, incidents of large-scale rigging and vote theft have been coming to light in the Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, due to which the credibility of the entire electoral process of the country has come to the fore. The Leader of Opposition said that when public representatives enter the Parliament by wrong means, bypassing the real mandate of the people, then every law passed through that Parliament completely loses its constitutional and legal validity.
Keeping in mind the historical context of Indian electoral politics, Rahul Gandhi raised serious questions on the election results of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. He said that in the political history of India, a natural anti-incumbency wave arises against every elected government with time, which no politician can deny. To strengthen his argument, he gave the historical example that despite winning the historic war like Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 and achieving unprecedented global fame, even a tall and popular leader like former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had to face defeat in the general elections of 1977. Rahul Gandhi raised the question that when public anger can work against such big and historical leaders of the country, then how does this anti-incumbency against the current BJP government at the Center become completely ineffective and disappear in the last ten years. He stressed that the personal popularity of a leader can be understood, but the sudden end of the anti-incumbency wave in every state and every election is a serious question whose answer will have to be seriously sought by the entire country and every conscious citizen.
Talking in detail on constitutional norms and democratic system, the Leader of Opposition said that the real foundation of any vibrant democracy is a fair vote of the common citizen. The Constitution has given the people the sovereign right to choose their government and their representatives by the power of this one vote, and the most sacred responsibility of protecting this basic right has been entrusted to the Election Commission of India. Rahul Gandhi alleged that when votes are stolen, it simply means that the spirit of the Constitution has been abolished. Taking a very strong stand, he said that when MPs enter the Parliament House with the help of rigging and vote rigging, they cease to be the real representatives of the people. In such a situation, every bill passed by those so-called MPs by voice vote or majority and every law made is completely illegal and unconstitutional. He said that this is not just an attack on the opposition parties or any one party, but a direct and open attack on the fundamental constitutional right of the country’s 140 crore citizens to choose the leader of their choice.
Taking aim at the appointment process and working style of the Chief Election Commissioner, Rahul Gandhi said that Gyanesh Kumar was appointed by the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. He claimed that today the situation has become so dire that voices of institutional rebellion have started being raised from within the Election Commission itself. Rahul made a sensational claim and said that two other Election Commissioners of the Election Commission are now openly admitting that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is directly responsible for causing huge damage to India’s transparent voting system. He said that when the responsible constitutional officers sitting inside the Commission themselves are accusing the Chief Election Commissioner’s working style of damaging the voting system, then there can be no bigger proof than this that the fairness of elections in the country has completely ended. Rahul Gandhi said that protecting the votes is the only and biggest responsibility of the Election Commission, and if this responsibility itself gets endangered then it clearly means that the Constitution of the country is not working smoothly.
During the press conference, the Leader of Opposition demanded Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to step down immediately without any delay. Rahul Gandhi revealed that he had written formal letters regarding the suspicious functioning of Gyanesh Kumar and election irregularities, but no concrete action was taken by the Commission on those letters and objections. Directly addressing the Chief Election Commissioner, Rahul said that he is a very educated and experienced administrative officer, he should understand very well what is being done to the democratic institutions of the country. Making a scathing attack, he said that what you have done is directly against the basic interests of India and democracy, because your main responsibility was to impartially protect the votes of the country and not to become an ally of the government in stealing elections. He said in a warning tone that this democratic crime will have to face serious consequences and those who are responsible for distorting this system will definitely be punished in the court of law and people, if not today then tomorrow.
Answering the sharp questions asked by the journalists in the press conference, Rahul Gandhi reiterated that for the last three years, the Congress Party and the opposition alliance have been strongly raising the issue across the country that there is no fairness in the elections and votes are being stolen continuously. He said that earlier when the opposition used to raise questions on EVMs, VVPATs and irregularities in the election process, the ruling party and the Commission itself used to dismiss it as mere frustration of electoral defeat. But today, the way the ‘SIR controversy’ has erupted within the Election Commission and the internal tussle has become public, it has been completely proved that what the opposition has been saying for the last three years was 100 percent true. Rahul Gandhi said that the Election Commission’s own statements and internal dissent have in a way officially accepted that there are huge anomalies in the Indian electoral system and elections are not being conducted in a fair manner across the country.
