Looking fresh and smelling all day long is an important part of everyone’s personality. A great fragrance not only boosts your confidence manifold but also leaves a positive impact on the people around you. This is the reason why people spend thousands of rupees on the most expensive perfumes, deodorants and body mists. But it is often seen that despite applying very expensive perfume, its fragrance disappears within a few hours or it turns into a strange smell. The biggest reason for this is not the quality of the perfume, but the basic mistakes made while applying it. The most common and wrong habit is to apply perfume directly after sweating to hide the smell.
Often people immediately take out the perfume bottle and spray it after the gym, after traveling in the sun or when they feel sweaty in the office. This is the biggest and most terrible mistake related to the use of perfume. Sweat does not have any specific odor of its own, but when sweat comes in contact with bacteria present on the skin, it produces foul smell.
When you spray perfume containing alcohol and chemicals on sweaty skin, the aromatic elements of the perfume and sweat containing bacteria mix together. This produces a very strange and pungent odor, which becomes unbearable for the people standing nearby. Apart from this, spraying perfume directly on sweat pores also increases the risk of skin irritation, itching and allergies. The right way is that after sweating, first wipe the skin dry with wet wipes or a clean wet towel, and only then use light fragrance.
Most people have this habit that as soon as they spray perfume on their wrists, they start rubbing their wrists together rapidly. By doing this, the perfume disappears more quickly instead of lasting longer. Perfume is made up of three stages—top notes, heart notes, and base notes.
When you rub your wrists, heat is generated due to friction. This heat breaks down the perfume’s micromolecules and top notes, disrupting the original balance of the fragrance and causing it to evaporate prematurely. Always spray the perfume lightly on the wrist and let it air dry naturally.
Hydration of the skin plays the most important role in making the fragrance last for a long time. Dry skin absorbs perfume oil very fast, due to which the fragrance disappears within an hour or two. On the contrary, perfume has a much stronger hold on moisturized skin.
The best time to apply perfume is immediately after bathing, when the skin pores are open. After bathing, apply unscented moisturizer or petroleum jelly on your pulse points and then spray perfume. Pulse points are the areas where blood vessels are closest to the skin and generate heat—such as the wrists, sides of the neck, behind the ears, the inner bend of the elbow, and the collarbone. The gentle heat emanating from these places keeps the fragrance slowly spreading in the air throughout the day.
Many people believe that applying perfume on clothes makes it last longer. Although scents may linger on some fabrics, the essential oils and alcohol in perfumes can leave stubborn stains and yellow spots on white or light-colored cotton, silk and linen fabrics. Perfumes are made to react primarily with body heat, not clothing.
Along with this, spraying more than necessary is also a big mistake. Spraying yourself 8 to 10 times to make yourself fragrant makes the fragrance so strong that it can cause headaches and sneezing. 3 to 4 balanced sprays of a good Eau de Parfum (EDP) is enough for the whole day.
To keep perfume fresh for a long time, its proper storage is as important as applying it correctly. Most people keep the perfume bottle on the bathroom shelf or on the dressing table near the window. Constant humidity of the bathroom, frequently changing temperature and direct sunlight (UV Rays) coming from the window spoil the chemical formula of the perfume.
Due to exposure to sunlight and heat, the color of the perfume changes within a few weeks and its fragrance becomes sour or dull. Perfume should always be stored in a cool, dry and dark place, such as a bedroom cupboard or within its original box. By keeping these small things in mind, you can get the full effect of your favorite fragrance.
