According to almanac calculations, Maha Bharani Shraddha will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 29 in the year 2026. According to the Panchang, Bharani Nakshatra will start at around 9.03 am on September 29 and will end the next day i.e. September 30 at 7.36 am. Since the presence of Bharani Nakshatra in the afternoon during Pitru Paksha is considered best for performing Shraddha, hence performing Bharani Shraddha on 29th September will be completely as per scriptures and fruitful. On this day, people will perform special rituals in many pilgrimage places and homes across the country for the peace of their ancestors.
What is the religious significance of Bharani Shraddha and the results similar to Gaya Shraddha?
According to Sanatan texts, the importance of Bharani Nakshatra falling in Pitru Paksha is considered equal to the Pind Daan done by going to Gaya pilgrimage. It is believed that if a person, due to some reason, is not able to go to Gaya Dham in Bihar and offer Shraddha or Pind Daan to his ancestors, if he does Tarpan and charity with full devotion and rituals at his home on the day of Maha Bharani Shraddha, then he gets the same inexhaustible virtuous results as Gaya Shraddha. Since the lord of Bharani Nakshatra is Yamraj, remembering Yamraj and donating food, clothes and water in the name of ancestors on this day eliminates the fear of untimely death and the ancestors’ blessings remain on the family.

In Hindu traditions, it is very important to have the right time (Muhurat) for any religious ritual or Shraddha ceremony. ‘Kutup Muhurat’ is considered the most auspicious and sacred to perform the Shraddha rituals on the day of Bharani Shraddha i.e. 29th September 2026. According to the Panchang, on September 29, Kutup Muhurta will start from 11:47 am in the morning and will continue till 12:35 pm. According to Hindu calendar, Kutup Muhurta is the eighth Muhurta of the day, which is considered paramount for worshiping ancestors and offering Pind Daan. Apart from this, tarpan can also be done by meditating the ancestors in Abhijeet Muhurta in the afternoon.

On the auspicious occasion of Bharani Shraddha, take bath early in the morning and wear clean clothes. After this, make arrangements for Kush and Tarpana in the north-east corner or holy place of your house. Prepare satvik food (kheer, puri, vegetables etc.) prepared for the ancestors. Before feeding the Brahmin, take out grass for the cow, dog, crow and ant. After this, remembering Yamraj, face towards the south and offer water, black sesame seeds, kush and barley to your ancestors.
